Callahan says he's proud of how offense has taken care of the ball, starting with Romo
Tony Romo is not going to force the ball if Dez Bryant is draped, and that is one reason the Cowboys have committed so few turnovers this year, offensive coordinator Bill Callahan said.
“One of the things I’m really proud of in terms of this offense is I think we turn it over the second least amount of times so far this year,” he said Thursday in his weekly session with reporters. “And that’s a positive. Gosh, if we had the year like we did last year, boy that would have been – it would be a killer. What’s really saved us right now is we’re not really turning the ball over on offense.”
The Cowboys have 11 giveaways, tied with Indianapolis for second-fewest in the NFL. The Chiefs have the fewest, nine.
The Cowboys’ plus-11 turnover ratio is also second-best in the league, tied with Seattle. The Chiefs again are No. 1, with a plus-15.
“The emphasis on the ball during practice and the two periods we spend each day working ball drills, anti-fumble, whatever that may be, what we do each day, has really helped us out significantly,” Callahan said. “Not fumbling it, not making bad decisions, I think Tony would be the first to tell you, he’s not going to force the ball if Dez is draped. But there are times where he feels confident that he can plug the throw in there, that he can make that throw. It’s a fine line.”
Callahan said the low turnover number does not mean Romo is being overprotective, however.
“He’ll throw some balls in some tight quarters, and he’ll take some risks,” Callahan said. “He’s not overly liberal with the ball, throwing it all over the place. So he’s really smart in his decision-making. And again, that goes back to the turnover ratio. If we’re not turning the ball over, you’re going to give yourself a chance to be in every game, and that’s all we want. Let’s protect the ball. Let’s do a great job with ball security, let’s make smart decisions.”
