It's all about formations and the matchups you get. I'm hoping whoever our new offensive coordinator is at least gets the freedom to do that. Our offense right now runs a lot of stagnate shit. They line up and they run the play. The most motion you see if a RB coming out of the backfield or a TE/WR lining up wide and then motioning inside to block. Which is why is looks like an offense straight out of the 80's. We have pick plays and other stuff. We just run those plays so sparingly that it seems like they aren't in our playbook. We put so few guys in motion that it looks like an 80's offense. But essentially these aren't revolutionary route concepts that McVay is running. It's how he calls the plays and the way he moves guys around and the formations that he uses to create mismatches while running the route concepts.
It's sort of like what you see in the interview between Gruden and Kellen Moore. The play they are running isn't really anything revolutionary or out of the box. But the window dressing is designed to confuse the crap out of the defense. Which leads to a successful play and in the NFL can lead to breakdowns in coverage.
