The Dallas Cowboys may not be done with upgrades before the NFL trade deadline expires on Tuesday.

Owner Jerry Jones echoed vice president Stephen Jones in saying the team is still seeking help at safety.

Jones said nothing is on the table but he told the Star-Telegram that safety will be the area of focus if the Cowboys do make another move, possibly as a replacement for strong safety Jeff Heath.

Miami make make safety Reshad Jones available, though his $13.1 million salary for 2019 and likely high-price tag in a trade could be a problem.

The team acquired defensive end Michael Bennett in a trade with the New England Patriots last Thursday. The Cowboys gave up a conditional 2021 seventh-round pick for Bennett. If he plays four games in 2019, the pick will become a 2021 sixth-round pick.

The Cowboys have allegedly been seeking help at safety for years but they made a concerted effort to study the possibilities for upgrades in the off season.

They discussed signing former Pro Bowler Earl Thomas in free agency before deciding his asking price was too high. They brought in veterans Eric Berry and Clayton Geathers on visits. Berry, who was let go by the Kansas City Chiefs before injury concerns, remains unsigned and Geathers re-signed with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Cowboys signed George Iloka to a minimum deal but continued to focus on the position leading up to the 2019 NFL Draft. Iloka was cut in training camp.

They brought in six safeties, the most of any other position, for pre-draft national visits. Highlighting that group was Mississippi State’s Johnathan Abrahm, Virginia’s Juan Thornhill, Washington Taylor Rapp and Michigan State’s Khari Willis.

Absent a first-round pick due to last year’s bye-week trade with the Oakland Raiders for receiver Amari Cooper, the Cowboys ultimately zeroed in on defensive tackle Trysten Hill and Thornhill for their first pick in the second round, 58th overall.

They chose Hill because of the importance to the under tackle on the Cowboys defense. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said Hill had the potential to be a disruptive pass rusher.

Hill has been a disappointment since training camp and his struggles are part of the reason the team felt the need to acquire Bennett as an interior rusher.

Hill has been inactive for three games and has just one tackle in the other four games he’s played combined.

Marinelli said last week that Hill regressed in the team’s last outing against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Thornhill has started all seven games for the Chiefs and has one interception.

The Cowboys are still looking for help at safety opposite Xavier Woods.

Shawn Williams from the Bengals should be the target. He's younger than Jones and significantly cheaper, with a cap hit next year of only about $4 million. Jamal Adams is the pie in the sky option, although I'd theoretically be fine giving up our 2020 1st and a 2021 mid-rounder for him.

They have a fuckin' safety. Donovan Wilson. Jimmy Johnson threw Robert Jones out there as a MLB, because he had the balls to draft Jones #1 out of a smaller program, and the balls to play the guy. Jones went on to become Rookie of the Year.

Garrett has no balls, as we all know.

Its really puzzling why they wont play the guy. Not a single snap on defense this yr I believe.

There has got to be something going on in practice or meetings you'd think. Hell they wouldnt even play him when woods was injured and Heath a little dinged up.

Interesting thought that I don't think I have seen mentioned anywhere else. Is coming off the best season of his career (110 tackles, 5 picks, 1 TD and a FF). Has also been a good blizter during his time in the league with Cinci.

[h=1]Cowboys Eyeing Trades For Safeties[/h]
October 28th, 2019 at 9:45am CST by Zach Links

The Cowboys will be scanning the trade market for safety help between now and Tuesday’s deadline, owner Jerry Jones says (via Clarence Hill of the Star Telegram). Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones also made similar comments over the weekend, which suggests that this will be an area of priority for Dallas.
Nothing is on the table right now, JJ says, but this could be an area of focus, potentially as a replacement for strong safety Jeff Heath. Heath, 28, has started in all seven of his games this year, but has lacked consistency. Currently, he ranks as just the No. 48 safety in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus, way down from his best work in 2016 and 2017.
It’s a familiar refrain for the Cowboys: they have been after safety help, on and off, for years. Their past flirtations with Earl Thomas, Eric Berry, and others of that ilk went nowhere, but this could finally be the time for the Cowboys to make a substantial upgrade.
Just days ago, the Cowboys made a pre-deadline deal by acquiring defensive end Michael Bennett in a trade with the Patriots. The next move could be for a safety such as Damarious Randall, Reshad Jones, or Jessie Bates. The real home run would be Jamal Adams, but it’s not clear if the Jets are willing to consider deals for the young standout.

I know I saw him on defense for one snap. But that may have been it. And there may have been a penalty or something on the play.

Hey Jerry...you do realize that a REAL GM finds DT and Safety help during the draft and the beginning of Free Agency. Right?

To be fair, he *found* Safeties in the draft. He just didn’t draft them.

Identifying players in the draft doesn't seem to be our issue. The visit lists are not bad at all. We just fuck up when making the crucial pick on the DL and ignoring safety.

How is it that we fans know what the fucking team needs and where they are lacking but the idiots running the show don’t until mid season and when it’s too LATE? IF they make the playoffs it’s because the Eagles are just as inept but this team won’t win the first game.
