And much of the reason Jimmy even wanted to leave had to do with Jerry's meddling.
Jimmy's the kind of personality that gets more uptight the longer he's in a commitment. Jerry was nothing, a hick, and putty in Jimmy's hands.
The author of "Boys will be Boys" paints Johnson as being very high strung throughout the Cowboys 1993-1994 season and that he barely enjoyed the second Superbowl victory. Some of it had to do with Jones and the Emmitt holdout, but it was more to do with Jimmy's own nature. By the end Johnson was looking for a reason to go and Jerry handed it to him on a silver platter (along with about 2 million bucks). Of course he's going to seize the opportunity (and get paid for doing it).
I know Jimmy would have made in 1994. No way the team trades up for Shante Carver, but then again would he have drafted Larry Allen? I do believe Jimmy would have looked for Emmitt insurance in the draft, though, if for no other reason than to not have his team held hostage like it had been to start the year before. He couldn't have prevented Big E from getting hammered and driving his Mercedes into a guard rail, but he sure as Hell would have been better prepared to deal with the muddy field in San Francisco than Barry Switzer was.
No way would he have taken three deep shots down the field with time expiring in the first half of the NFC Championship game giving the 49ers another scoring opportunity or ever allowed Larry Brown to cover Jerry Rice one on one. I think he'd have made a 10 point difference in that game as poorly as it had been coached, and that would have tied the score leaving the outcome in doubt.
