I can't imagine what it would be like to have been thoroughly defeated by a foreign power and ruled for several years by that other country, subject to the cruel whims and arbitrary constrictions of that country's dictator.

And only be free because other countries had the ability and wherewithal to liberate you.

I would hope they would be eternally grateful because I know I would be.
