Charles Woodson update, via agent Carl Poston. He plans on visiting #Raiders on Tuesday. He received an offer from #Broncos, is still open

Per Carl Poston: Charles Woodson does not plan on retiring. Poston says he'll play somewhere. Woodson appears frustrated by the system.

Woodson will get a call when the first starting corner goes down with an ACL.

Two years, $8.75 million for Freeney

Posted by Mike Florio on May 18, 2013, 12:30 PM EDT

Recent reports indicated that Dwight Freeney was willing to take the same base deal signed by Osi Umenyiora in Atlanta: Two years, $8.5 million.

Freeney ended up doing a little better. If $250,000 counts as “a little.”

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, Freeney’s two-year contract with the Chargers carries a base value of $8.75 million.

The deal pays $5.25 million in 2013, via a $3.25 million signing bonus, $1.5 million in guaranteed base salary, and a $500,000 roster bonus tied to Freeney’s presence on the weekly 46-man roster. (It works out to $31,250 per game.)

Freeney is due to earn $3.5 million in 2014, $500,000 of which is linked to weekly roster bonuses.

The contract carries a maximum value of $13.35 million, with $4.6 million tied exclusively to sacks. Though the targets aren’t currently known, we’re told that the numbers are realistic, based on his past production.

Bears release DT Andre Fluellen
Posted by Mike Wilkening on May 20, 2013, 12:49 PM EDT

A little more than a month after signing him, the Bears announced the release of defensive tackle Andre Fluellen on Monday.

The 28-year-old Fluellen has appeared in 56 games in five NFL seasons, notching 52 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He had stints with Miami and Detroit in 2012. The Lions drafted him in the third round in 2008 out of Florida State.

The 6-foot-2, 302-pound Fluellen has primarily been a backup interior lineman on teams employing 4-3 schemes, and it’s possible he could appeal to clubs using four-player defensive lines.

Ravens sign Daryl Smith

Posted by Josh Alper on June 5, 2013, 5:23 PM EDT

The Ravens were busy visiting the White House on Wednesday so they let the NFL’s daily personnel notice make the announcement of an addition they hope helps them make a return visit to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue again next season.

Baltimore has signed former Jaguars linebacker Daryl Smith, a move presaged by reports of mutual interest between player and team in the last 24 hours. Smith was a 2004 second-round pick of the Jaguars and was a mainstay in their starting lineup for much of the last decade before a groin injury limited him to two games last year.

Smith adds to the team’s options at inside linebacker, where they are replacing Dannell Ellerbe and Ray Lewis. They also have Jameel McClain and second-round pick Arthur Brown in the mix at the position, giving them a fair mix of experience and upside heading into the season.

The Ravens released linebacker Michael McAdoo to make room for Smith. McAdoo has spent the last two years sidelined by injuries, but his intriguing size will likely earn him at least a look elsewhere in the league.

Excellent signing by the Ravens.

Damn, the things you can do with a quality GM.

This is quickly turning into a dump on Jerry thread. Just reminding everyone to tread lightly.

We'll reserve that for LT...which should be pretty soon if my calculations are correct.

Report: Colts, Ahmad Bradshaw in “heavy negotiations”
Posted by Josh Alper on June 10, 2013, 11:59 AM EDT

Last week saw free agent running back Ahmad Bradshaw leave a visit with the Colts without signing a contract.

That doesn’t mean that a deal that makes Bradshaw a member of the team’s backfield is off the table. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the Colts and Bradshaw remain in “heavy negotiations” on a contract.

There’s no word on what obstacles remain to striking a deal, but we’d imagine that money is near the top of the list. Given the lack of other suitors for Bradshaw’s services, there’s not much reason for the Colts to offer much more than the veteran’s minimum. Bradshaw would want more, but he’s not exactly overflowing with leverage thanks to his history of foot injuries and the aforementioned dearth of teams trying to sign him in June.

Should a deal get done, it would likely signal the end of the line in Indy for either Donald Brown or Delone Carter as Bradshaw and Vick Ballard would bump one of them down to fourth on a depth chart that probably has room for only three tailbacks.

Bears sign Sedrick Ellis

Posted by Josh Alper on June 11, 2013, 4:24 PM EDT

The Bears had one free spot on their 90-man roster at the start of business on Tuesday, but they’ll close the day with a full complement of players.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Bears have signed defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis. Ellis visited with the Bears last week, part of a tour that also included stops in Detroit and New England for the seventh overall pick of the 2008 draft.

The Saints were the team that picked Ellis in that draft, but he never really lived up to the lofty draft status during his five years in New Orleans. Although he started 70 games for the Saints, Ellis turned out to be more of a solid piece than the building block he looked like he might be when he came out of college.

Solid would likely suit the Bears’ needs for an option behind Henry Melton and Stephen Paea on their depth chart at defensive tackle.

Feh.

They could have had Jeris Pendleton, but we were just too fast for them.

Broncos release Willis McGahee
Posted by Josh Alper on June 13, 2013, 10:54 AM EDT

On Tuesday, we pointed out that running back Willis McGahee didn’t get many reps upon his return to the Broncos after skipping the voluntary portion of the offseason schedule working out on his own.

Those reps won’t be going up anytime soon. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Broncos have released McGahee. McGahee alluded to the possibility that he’d be asked to turn in his playbook earlier this week, saying that “if something happens, it happens” when asked about the competition at running back in Denver.

McGahee’s departure signals confidence in that competition, particularly Ronnie Hillman and rookie Montee Ball. They’ve gotten the majority of work with the first team this spring with McGahee in Miami and Knowshon Moreno rehabbing his own knee injury, but it was widely expected that the Broncos would wait until training camp before making any decisions about the future of the two missing veterans. That proved incorrect and McGahee’s $2.5 million salary for the coming season may have also played a role in the decision to cut ties now.

McGahee is 31 and coming off a knee injury of his own, but he’ll still likely draw interest from teams looking for help in the backfield. He’s a more appealing prospect than other veteran free agents like Brandon Jacobs and Michael Turner and brings a more versatile skill set with him than Cedric Benson, although the experience of other older backs this offseason suggests it won’t be a stampede for McGahee’s services.

UPDATE 10:55 a.m. ET: The Broncos have officially announced the move.

“It’s never easy to part ways with a veteran player who made so many positive contributions to our team and community,” John Elway said in a statement. “I appreciate all of the competitiveness, toughness and leadership Willis brought to the Broncos. He was an integral part of our team’s turnaround during the past two seasons, and I wish him the best as he continues his NFL career.”

Packers make Desmond Bishop release official

Posted by Josh Alper on June 17, 2013, 4:55 PM EDT

Linebacker Desmond Bishop is officially a free agent.

The Packers have announced that Bishop has been released, confirming the report from Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel earlier on Monday and completing a slow march toward a breakup with Bishop that began when the team shopped him in trade talks before the draft. Bishop spoke to Dunne after getting the news from the Packers and said it was “understandable” that they cut him coming off a ruptured hamstring tendon with a $3.464 million base salary in 2013 and that he’s not opposed to a return to the team if he can’t find a better situation somewhere else.

“It’s not necessarily over,” Bishop said. “There’s an outside chance that I could still be a Packer. So we still have a good relationship. … If I don’t get the right compensation, I’d rather be in a familiar place.”

It’s probably wiser to bet on Bishop playing somewhere else in 2013. We’ve already heard about interest from the Vikings and teams like the Chiefs, Bills and Raiders could also be interested in shoring up uncertain situations at inside linebacker. If Bishop’s healthy, and he tells Dunne he is despite a hamstring strain that helped keep him on the sideline this spring, there’s a pretty good chance he’ll land the kind of deal he’s looking for with someone other than the Packers.

Source: Bishop picks Vikings

Posted by Mike Florio on June 24, 2013, 2:57 PM EDT

The Lambeau-to-Metrodome pipeline continues to flow. Primarily from Wisconsin to Minnesota.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, former Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop has agreed to terms with the Vikings. It’s a one-year deal.

Bishop was cut last week by Green Bay, after suffering a serious hamstring injury during the 2012 season. He visited the Vikings and Chiefs last week, and he also drew interest from the Jaguars, Giants, and 49ers.

In Minnesota, he’ll compete with Erin Henderson for the starting job in the middle. It has been flagged as one of the team’s top needs on defense, and the Vikings passed on the opportunity to beef up with position with three first-round picks in the 2013 draft.

Bishop previously said he aspires to be the 2013 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. It could still happen, but not in the way anyone previously had envisioned.

Bengals release Jamaal Anderson

Posted by Darin Gantt on July 10, 2013, 4:00 PM EDT

The Bengals tried buying low with defensive end Jamaal Anderson, but eventually, the price became too high.

The Bengals announced via Twitter they had released the former eighth overall pick in the 2007 Draft.

He never lived up to his draft status with the Falcons, who chose him in 2007, but was a serviceable-enough player for the Colts in 2011. He signed a two-year, $5.5 million deal with the Bengals last offseason, which seemed like a decent value at the time.

But he missed most of last season with a torn quadriceps, and was due to make a base salary of $2.5 million. Coupled with using a second-rounder on Margus Hunt this year, the Bengals simply didn’t need him.
