Maybe he got access to free team doctors and rehab staff by remaining with the team this long. And maybe now he's healthy enough to pass a physical and get a look on someone else's camp.

Versus before he'd have to pay for that care himself? Dunno.

I think this is what it was, all I read he was very liked by all. Probably gave him a chance to rehab and then cut him so he can catch on elsewhere. It wouldn't surprise me to see him back someday as part of coaching staff.
