I'd say Kiffin is a goner. Otherwise we wouldn't have allowed Marinelli to leave. And now that Garrett is staying and Jerry is still hiring the coordinators, I don't think it really matters who the new DC and DL coaches will be. Just rearranging deck chairs at this point.

I was just perusing the interweb and saw mention of Dave Wannstedt and possibly returning to Dallas. Um...haha?

Did the report indicate that they'd have to review the film to verify that information?

Lovie Smith’s hiring could end Revis experiment

Posted by Mike Florio on January 1, 2014, 11:36 PM EST

With new Bucs coach Lovie Smith presumably bringing the Tampa Two back to the place where it was born, one of the first orders of offseason business could be to send last year’s top offseason acquisition packing.

Darrelle Revis, a man-to-man coverage specialist who reportedly didn’t like being used in zone coverage this past season, doesn’t fit the traditional duties of a cornerback in the Tampa Two. Given a contract that pays him $16 million per year with no guaranteed money or frills that would trigger a cap hit, the Bucs could walk away from Revis and save $16 million in both cash and cap space for 2014.

There’s another reason to dump Revis sooner than later. The Buccaneers could avoid upgrading the final piece of the trade puzzle from a top-10 fourth-round pick in 2014 to a top-10 third-round pick.

Based on the specific timing of the trigger for the upgraded pick, the Bucs may have to choose between dumping Revis and keeping the third-rounder or trying to trade his $16 million-per-year contract after the fourth-round pick increases by one round.

While Smith and his eventual defensive coordinator may decide to make Smith’s preferred defense fit Revis, it could make more sense to cut the cord and devote the cash to a player like soon-to-be-free-agent Bears cornerback Peanut Tillman.

Bruce Allen says Redskins haven’t spoken to Bill Cowher

Posted by Josh Alper on January 2, 2014, 4:04 PM EST

We’ve been learning some of the names of the coaches on the Redskins’ radar for their head coaching vacancy, but owner Dan Snyder’s history of big-name hires has kept people wondering if things could head in that direction again.

One of those big names is former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, but General Manager Bruce Allen said during a Thursday interview with Mark Maske of the Washington Post that the team has not contacted Cowher. In December there was a report that Cowher was not interested in giving up his television gig for a return to coaching in 2014.

Allen wouldn’t comment when asked about whether he’s spoken to another Super Bowl winner now in the television game. Jon Gruden and Allen worked together in Tampa Bay and Gruden said this week that he didn’t want to be considered for any openings. Allen also wouldn’t say whether any college coaches were under consideration for the job.

“I’m not going to say because then, again, we would be getting into names and I’m not going to do that,” Allen said.

Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell are other names that have been linked to the Redskins since they fired Mike Shanahan.

Report: Todd Bowles will interview with Browns on Friday

Posted by Josh Alper on January 2, 2014, 3:04 PM EST

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is scheduled to interview with the Browns on Saturday and the Browns will fill some of the hours until then by meeting with another candidate for their head coaching job.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles will interview with the team on Friday. Cleveland’s interest in talking to Bowles was reported earlier this week, but there was a report that he might choose to pass up the opportunity. By interviewing Bowles, the Browns will satisfy the requirements of the Rooney Rule.

Bowles oversaw a very good Cardinals defense in 2013 that finished the year sixth in the NFL in yards allowed and seventh in points allowed. Bowles finished the 2012 season as the defensive coordinator in Philadelphia after Juan Castillo was fired and spent the final three games of the 2011 season as the Dolphins’ interim coach after Tony Sparano was fired. Bowles is also reportedly a candidate to replace Leslie Frazier in Minnesota.

Bowles and McDaniels will join Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn on the list of interviews conducted by the Browns.

Gilbride has "retired" from the Giants. Too bad Kiffin won't.

Rich Bisaccia on Redskins' coaching list
January, 3, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- For the second straight year the Dallas Cowboys will see their special teams coordinator interview for an NFL head coaching vacancy.

According to ESPN’s John Clayton, Rich Bisaccia will interview with the Washington Redskins. Last year Joe DeCamillis interviewed with the Chicago Bears and eventually joined Marc Trestman’s staff as assistant head coach/special teams coordinator.

Bisaccia put together one of the better special teams’ units in the NFL last season, but he almost never got to the Cowboys. If things had not worked out, then he would be coaching in the BCS Championship game for Auburn. He was the school’s running backs, special teams and assistant head coach for 22 days before joining the Cowboys last winter.

Bisaccia and Redskins general manager Bruce Allen worked together for years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Bisaccia was Jason Garrett’s top choice last season, but he also interviewed Bruce DeHaven, a former Cowboys’ special teams coach, and Alan Lowry.

The Cowboys saw improvement in their kickoff and punt return averages, albeit minimally in the punt returns. The kickoff and punt coverage were also improved by fractions, and there were no major breakdowns.

In 2012, the Cowboys had a punt blocked, a punt returned for a touchdown, and a kickoff returned for a touchdown. This season, the longest punt return allowed was 26 yards, and the longest kickoff return was 45 yards.

With injuries on defense, Bisaccia had to mix and match his units, but they were able to hold up their end of the bargain.

Per ESPN, Titans have fired HC Mike Munchak.
Crazy. Maybe they got pissed off he was angling for the Penn State job.

If I were them, I'd seriously look at James Franklin of Vanderbilt. Washington and Cleveland are looking at him too.

Franklin hasn't done anything besides make Vanderbilt an average team, I understand why some top notch college programs would be interested but this is not a guy an NFL team should be interested in at this point.

Hell, this dude was the OC at Maryland less than 5 years ago, give me a break.

To be fair, turning Vandy into an average team isn't a small task. Plus they went to a bowl game in consecutive years for the first time in like 60 years.

I think the job Cutcliffe has done at Duke is arguably more impressive.
