Jason Garrett: Have to do better job of finishing
December, 5, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- One of Jason Garrett's themes this year has been to finish.

There are multiple ways to interpret the message just as there are multiple ways to interpret another one of his memes -- fight. But the Cowboys didn't finish quite well in Thursday's 41-28 win against the Chicago Bears.

After taking a 35-7 lead late in the third quarter, the Cowboys coasted, especially on defense. Special teams contributed to the mess by giving up an onside kick. The offense had to settle for a Dan Bailey field goal after a DeMarco Murray run got them to the Chicago 8 early in the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys were able to shore up the win with an Orlando Scandrick interception with 1:29 to play.

“We’re happy with the W, but we’re not happy with the last quarter of our play,” cornerback Brandon Carr said. “That’s something we have to improve upon going forward, because this is playoff football now.”

The Cowboys sat back in coverage during Chicago's comeback, which was part of the plan. They were willing to let the Bears pile up yards but they went to the extreme.

"We have to do a better job," Garrett said.

The good news for Garrett is that his players know it. Dez Bryant and Scandrick were emotional on the sidelines when things were going south. Some might view that as a negative but the Cowboys are a team that operate with a thin margin for error. They can't R-E-L-A-X as Aaron Rodgers told the Green Bay Packers faithful early in the season. They just aren't good enough.

“You have to dominate once you get a team down,” Carr said. “You’ve got your foot on the throat, you’ve got to go ahead and step on it, man.”

I remember the 1992 cowboys were up 34-0 on the Giants and struggled to win 34-28. It's too easy to ease up defensively once an opponent goes limp.

Big lead or not, this is not the kind of defense that can ever afford to let up and that was obvious Thursday. If Scandrick hadn't made that pick and The Bears ended up with a TD, I could actually see that game ending up in the L column. That's pathetic considering they had lost Marshall and Bennett was gimpy.

It is a soft scheme to begin with and without a pass rush it is even softer.

IMO, it is not built to shut down games. The zone scheme itself is not exactly shut down to begin with. It gets looser with a lead and even easier to exploit.
