Cowboys' sub packages to be stressed

September, 19, 2013

IRVING, Texas -- One of the biggest differences in the Dallas Cowboys’ move from the 3-4 scheme to the 4-3 under Monte Kiffin is the sub packages.

The Cowboys do not have a dime package with six defensive backs. Five is the most defensive backs they will put on the field at one time.

“We’ll get it done,” cornerback Morris Claiborne said.

The St. Louis Rams come to AT&T Stadium with an offense that likes to spread the field. They ran three-wide receiver formations 48 times last week at Atlanta. They flexed the tight end into the slot 25 times. They used an empty package 10 times.

They will stress the Cowboys with quarterback Sam Bradford; receivers Tavon Austin, Chris Givens, Brian Quick and Austin Pettis and tight ends Jared Cook and Lance Kendricks.

“They have a lot of talent when it comes to guys in space and quick guys and a quarterback who can make every throw so for us being able to play in space,” linebacker Sean Lee said. “Being able to match up with some of those guys will definitely be an issue for us and we’re preparing for it and I think we’ll be ready.”
