Cowboys happy to see Orlando Scandrick again

Todd Archer, ESPN Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas -- After missing the first four weeks of the Dallas Cowboys' offseason conditioning program, cornerback Orlando Scandrick has returned to work this week.

Now he waits for an offer from the Cowboys that sounded like it was coming after he and his agent, Ron Slavin, met with the team last week.

Coach Jason Garrett is glad Scandrick, one of the team's leaders, is around the team again.

"Orlando loves to play football," Garrett said. "He loves playing for the Cowboys. His great strength as a football player is his passion for the game and the edge that he plays with. So good to see him back out there doing the work this week leading up to the (organized team activities) next week."

Scandrick is the longest-tenured Cowboys defender, having joined the team in 2008.

"What a lot of people don't know about Orlando is that he's smart," safety J.J. Wilcox said. said. "He's a smart and great player inside that locker room. And he's a veteran. Our defense is real young, so having a veteran presence makes a big difference."

Scandrick is scheduled to make $1.5 million this year as part of a re-worked deal he signed late in 2013 that guaranteed him $9 million. He is the fourth-highest paid cornerback on the Cowboys' roster behind Brandon Carr ($8 million), Morris Claiborne ($2.6 million) and Corey White ($1.542 million). Because he will not take part in 90 percent of the offseason program, Scandrick is out $500,000 on his base salary but a new deal would more than make up the difference.

He is signed through 2018.

Garrett said Scandrick looks good and "you can tell he's been working out," the coach said. "We're going to take care of the football part. The business side will take care of itself."
