This doesn't seem to be the year to find an exciting new coach.

This doesn't seem to be the year to find an exciting new coach.

I think there are a couple of guys available.

Schwartz may be despite what the Browns are saying. Especially if the new HC wants his own guy.

Flores may still hit the open market.

Then, a fresh young guy from an established tree might also make a lot of sense.

Honestly, anyone other than what we had would be a relief at this point.

You want to aim for the moon, but anyone who can field a competent unit would be a huge upgrade and go a long way towards making the team competitive.

Kingsbury and Whitt out in DC, per Tom Pellissero & Ian Rappaport
Whitt is a sacrificial offering, Quinn is the one running the defense and it'll have issues one way or the other as such.

Getting rid of Kingsbury is a mistake, I thought he was a terrible hire initially but he did a great job of squeezing everything he could out of their limited talent, while managing Daniels and not asking him to do too much. I think their offense (and Daniels) will be worse without him, and I wouldn't be shocked if part of the reason for the move was pure self preservation on Quinn's part, possibly scared that another so-so year next year could mean he's out to promote Kingsbury to HC.

Yeah, very surprised about Kliffy. He did great with Daniels, and surely they don't expect anyone to win much with Mariotta.

Simp is probably right -- this may have been Quinn's self-preservation instinct.

Yeah Quinn made a mistake with this one in my opinion. He probably should have just kept Kliff and worked on fixing his defense that is aging and not very good. We bitch about the talent on our defense but I'm not sure there is a whole lot of talent on the Skins defense either. If there offense takes a step backward Quinn is looking at getting himself fired after next season. That teams arrow is pointing down.

So here is the thing about him following Vance Joseph as his defensive coordinator. He will never get credit for the defense where ever he goes. It would be Vance Joseph really running the defense. And that hurts a guy when he is looking to jump to head coach for example.

On the other hand if he goes to say Dallas or somewhere else to be the defensive coordinator, he would be in charge of the defense. And if that unit succeeds he is going to get head coaching opportunities and the credit for the success. So to me this is just a question of if Leonard wants to actually run a defense or if he still wants to sit in the shadow of Vance Joseph. You follow Vance if you feel like you still have more to learn or don't feel confident or ready to be a defensive coordinator. But ultimately my guess is a guy like Leonard is going to prefer the opportunity to actually be in charge of a defense. And to really have that chance he will need to leave Vance.

Just my opinion. I think he would be making a mistake if he passed up defensive coordinator jobs to follow Vance.

If Joseph leaves Leonard is just going to become the Denver DC, assuming that's what Payton wants to do.

Only chance he'd go elsewhere is money.
Yeah and that would make some sense for Leonard. It's a damn easy transition. You have talent, the scheme is already in place, now go do your thing. The only real downside is you sort of have to live up to really lofty expectation right away. If the defense takes any steps backward, the finger is going to get pointed at you. You take a job in Dallas on the other hand and you really just have to put out a good defense and you'll be viewed as a massive success.

That all comes down to preference. Plus I'm sure money will play a role. Not sure Denver even has to let him leave if they want him to be DC.
