Davis is a bit player, their defense took off because of Fangio primarily.

The talent was there in spots but Fangio is what really lit the fuse, plus the fact that they hit on two immediate starting CB's in the draft. But now that they lost two of their top three pass-rushers from last year I think you'll see it drop a bit.
Agreed they rounded out their talent, especially hitting on that rookie CB, but it really stems from that interior led by Carter. It has enabled them to treat their pass rushers like interchangeable parts.

Meanwhile Dallas sits at 28th in yards per opposing rush attempt.

Carter, yes, Davis, no, in my opinion.

But Carter was a guy who was a no-brainer top 3-5 type who dropped because of some vague off-field stuff, and of course right into the Eagles laps.

If you look at the elite DT's across the league almost all of them were top 20 picks, very few guys fall outside of that range, let alone into the 2nd/3rd and beyond. It just seems to be one of the positions that you absolutely need to take very high if you want a well-rounded 310+ type who can also rush the passer.

Dexter Lawrence, Jeffrey Simmons, Carter, Vita Vea, Quinnen Williams, Christian Wilkins, all top 20 and most top 10-15. Chris Jones is the only outlier but he's one guy, who also went just a few picks outside of the first. You could argue they should've taken Derrick Harmon this past year (I would have) but they instead went with sort of an offensive mirror of Harmon with an OG, which I think will be a fascinating conversation a few years down the line.

The point being that I don't fully blame them for not having an elite, well-rounded DT, aside from this weird shit they're doing with Mazi's weight instead of just playing him as the 0T/1T that he is and being done with it. Osa is about the best you're going to end up with outside of the top 20.

I still think Davis is a top-quarter of the NFL DT, and when you inject Carter everything gets better.

I really, really wish they had drafted Harmon. He reminds me of Jones with his tenacity and nose for the play.

Like you said, you don't find these guys too far removed from the 1st round, while I think the league is replete with solid guards from the middle rounds.

The measure of Booker's success will be how well the offense is elevated because of him. If he can help restore Steele to 2021 form, for example.
