At least last night he showed something. Up to now he hasn't even looked like a functional NFL QB. I've been a little surprised that even people working for the team, from Nate Newton to Jesse Holley to Babe Laufenberg, were so openly saying that you can't even put this guy on the field if Dak gets hurt. You know it's bad when that's happening.

He may be similar to Bo Nix athletically with a stronger arm. But Nix had so many reps in college.
He really reminds me in a lot of ways physically of Cam Newton. Just a massive man, big cannon and can run really well. Not as fast and athletic as Cam Newton. But the same rocket arm and throwing stuff on a rope sometimes instead of throwing with touch. And even the missing the broad side of a barn sometimes and then nailing a 60 yard pass in the perfect spot the next play.

Cam Newton was a guy whose completion percentage was often times in the 50's. My guess is you'll see a similar result with Melton. If he could just learn to take a few more of the easy completions he would probably be in the same range.

A few things seem to have helped.

First and foremost he seems to have taken to heart that he can't throw everything a thousand miles an hour.

Second, and this is the big thing to me, the run game was working and they kept him in favorable down and distance much of the night.

Cam might be the most elite physical specimen to ever play QB. If he was more accurate, it would have been frightening.

Right, to me his biggest problem is just managing the game, staying on schedule, all that. Just take the easy throws when they're there. Move the chains and possess the ball. Not everything has to be a 25 yard gain.

Problem is, surely he's been told this his whole life. If it still isn't sinking in, when will it? But maybe eventually he gets it, who knows.

Maybe in a real game you'd run him a lot more which would really help.

He was also much quicker to use his legs when he saw a lane, which is important for a QB like him who is...limited as a passer.

He was taking some heat off his passes last night which was probably the most important thing I saw.

They're going to try to sneak him to the practice squad, I fear. :sad

Hope I'm wrong. That was my favorite play of the game (besides I guess the Milton-Brooks TD). He kind of did it all there -- got skinny to get through the hole, trucked one guy, then dragged another one six or seven yards who tried to tackle him too high.

I don't think Mafah is anything special necessarily but given that our RB situation might be a complete mess, I think you have to find a way to keep him.

That is unless they actually think Luepke might be able to function as a pseudo-RB, which I could see if you keep him around 8-10 carries.

I actually don't think he's super special either, but I do think he could fill a role as that power back that we really don't have. Williams is kind of stocky, but he's not really a power guy. And with the way Schottenheimer seems to want a physical team, I'm hoping he values that enough to at least keep him on the practice squad and develop him some more.

It seems like we've been a soft team for a long time now and it would be fun to have a back who can at least deliver some punishment, even if he never gains a ton of yardage.

Just read Sanders has a shoulder injury and that is why he didn't play last night. Also missed time already with a knee issue. Cut. Bait.

I'm not sure he's better than Malik frickin Davis off the street.

If they want to throw him on the practice squad then fine. But he should not make the roster.

And he's not even that good even when healthy. He looked as spare as it gets against the Ravens.

I just don't get it, other than that he's the guy they picked and they hate admitting they were wrong.

Another note on that Mafah run, look how well it was blocked. Wasn't a huge hole and he did well to squeeze through it, but pretty much every guy did his job on that play. Nice to see. I still have faith in Adams and I assume his right hand man Riley.

I think he looks fast in practice when guys aren't wrapping up. And he probably is fast. But he is a guy who needs a lot of running room to be effective in my opinion.

Mafah might not be special but he is built to be a workhorse and compliments our other backs extremely well. So yes I want to keep him. Blue is the perfect compliment to Mafah. Would be silly to dump one now.

Right, and I suspect they're putting huge weight on his being a veteran. Too much weight, I think.

I still say I wish we'd just kept Rico. He, Blue, and Mafah would have been all right. But oh well.
