You don't but what do you do if you do have two guys of that caliber on the roster? When letting one go creates a drop off to Tolbert level WRs after Lamb? But anyway... You need two "good" WRs, yes. A Tolbert or washed up Cooks won't work. But I don't know that you need two top-5 type WRs.
Yeah, so that's why I'm 100% in favor of just paying him.The issue is I kind of doubt they'd get more than 1 pick for him. I'm not sure they'd get a first for him even.
That and maybe these idiots get lucky with a few picks on the defensive side, at which point you have an excellent offense and maybe a defense that isn't historically retarded.Yeah, so that's why I'm 100% in favor of just paying him.
I mean, who gives a shit what our cap situation is? It's not like it matters one way or the other right?
We're not going to spend the money we have to improve the roster via free agency and we're not going to fail to sign anyone because there's no money for it.
This organization has its mind made up on how they approach free agency irregardless of what our cap is, so what difference does it truly make how we allocate our resources?
And when was the last time you felt we didn't make the Super Bowl because of the cap?
Never.
So fuck it.... Just pay him and at least we get to watch a competitive team take the field for the next couple of years.
I think a good defensive coordinator can scheme a defense to average. We are bottom barrel coaching on that side of the ball eight now. A couple first round talents added and yeah you should be able at least have a watchable defense. That and maybe these idiots get lucky with a few picks on the defensive side, at which point you have an excellent offense and maybe a defense that isn't historically retarded.
Also, to @Genghis Khan also... You don't think someone would give a one for him? Especially a team in the lower first that he could put over the top? Having to pay him knocks him down some, but I don't think it does two rounds.
Fair enough, but I think he's proven now that the problem at Pittsburgh was the lack of QB. He's putting up numbers like he never has before. Plus his attitude hasn't been a problem. Even that Charles Robinson of Yahoo said he hasn't heard of any issues, even from his back channels, where at Pittsburgh that's all he heard about.Probably not. We just traded a third for him 2 months ago. I know he's proven himself more since then, but it's still the same contract situation that the new team has to deal with.
This guy is an absolute must sign…. The man is an absolute freak…. He could beat you deep…. He catch the jump all over you…. He can run those tough inside routes…. And make those delicate catches near the sideline….. wide receivers that carry all those intangibles are a rarity
It's funny, I remember wanting to draft him bad in that draft. He went late second round and we drafted Tolbert in the third claiming a second round grade on him. This guy is an absolute must sign…. And although he's not as good as Micah, GB didn't mind giving us a haul on top of having to pay the huge contract.
He went 4 picks before Sam Williams. Someone Quinn just had to have in the draft. Which reminds me, why the hell do we let coaches draft players?
I still think Jerry likes granting them wishes to 1) create an obligation and 2) remind them who runs things here.He went 4 picks before Sam Williams. Someone Quinn just had to have in the draft. Which reminds me, why the hell do we let coaches draft players?
It's because there is no organizational philosophy or ethos for how to build a defense, so they just float in the wind based on the whims of the DC.It's funny, Broaddus was talking about this very thing being a major problem, that they need to get away from letting the assistant coaches have a say in the draft room.

I agree. His value is as high as it will be right now. I say try to get a 1st for him (which means you flipped a 3rd for a 1st) and if you can't, keep him. Having 3 1sts in next year's draft would offer us incredible flexibility and provide us with the ammo we need to begin fixing the defense.
It's almost like Jerry does it so that when the player fails he can point at the coach. As opposed wondering if it's the coach or the player (The GM's fault).I still think Jerry likes granting them wishes to 1) create an obligation and 2) remind them who runs things here.
The other part of the equation is age. Sometimes you do that because you want a younger guy knowing that you're 29 year old receiver may only have a few years left in him.I look at it like, with 1 first you're hoping to get a guy as good as Pickens, and it's no guarantee. You might as well keep him.

But Pickens is 24. There will be guys drafted who are basically the same age as him right now. Again, it's a little insane to think about. He is physically just starting his prime.
