Film Study - 3rd Round CB Shavon Revel
Revel has an incredible back story and some items to consider, but the tape is great.

(On March 18th, we did a full three-game film study on what eventually became the Cowboys 3rd round pick, Shavon Revel from East Carolina in the Sturm 60 feed. For those who missed it, here it is completely unaltered for you to check out).

No. 28 - Shavon Revel - Age 22 - Junior - 6’2 - 194 - East Carolina

Revel was unable to run at the combine as he continues to recover from his ACL in September of 2024.

  • Native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and was a two-way player (QB/CB) in high school as well as track and field. 3-star recruit in class of ‘20 who went to Louisburg JUCO.
  • Worked at Amazon overnights and tried out for East Carolina and displayed more than enough to get an offer.
  • Has suffered a car accident in high school and in 2024 had ACL in practice that has caused him to fight through adversity.
2022 - 25 snaps, 1 target, 0 missed tackles, 1 penalty, 118.8 QB Rating - 48.3 PFF
2023 - 651 snaps, 43 targets, 3 missed tackles, 6 penalties, 61.2 QB Rating - 81.5 PFF
2024 - 204 snaps, 21 targets, 1 missed tackles, 1 penatly, 48.8 QB Rating - 70.0 PFF
Due to his injury, we used two games from his 2023 season Michigan in Week 1 and Florida Atlantic in Week 11 and then Old Dominion in Week 2 from 2024:

Michigan: This is one long dude with great height and arm length. When you combine that with a twitched up corner, there are many teams that will sit up in their chairs to examine your tape. They have him charging downhill into the backfield for run support so there are indications of a corner who will tackle and get physical. His arms are absurdly long. His ability to get into zone drops and make plays on the ball are apparent and he breaks up a touchdown with that reach and break. Can’t teach that. East Carolina is almost completely in zone, but when he carries his man he seems to be hip to hip and confident in his coverage. Back pedals and maintains a nice feel for his receiver. His make-up speed does not necessarily seem elite on this tape, but let’s see more.

Florida Atlantic: Looks to get involved in run-support. Great mover and has length that allows him to play with his head up. Arrives with some thump in run support or rallying to the ball. He is ready to tackle. I like that for sure. In press, his arms set the tone for the snap and his man had no chance on the release at 1:10. He is a big physical player. Covers a ton of ground and then gets his guy to the ground. Really enjoyed his running across the field on a crosser at 1:45. Great authority. This is a zone corner who will find the ball. He has fine instincts and will make a play and get a takeaway.

Old Dominion: First snap, he has a chance for a Pick-6 and gets a little excited and drops it, making us remember the phrase that if he could catch he would be a wide receiver. But, I really enjoy how often the play is in front of him and he closes down and makes an easy tackle. That gets harder at the next level, but this player can get his guy to the ground. He plays an intimidating style and wants to mix it up. Feels like every ball is his. Gave up a touchdown when his own guy picked him off in a man coverage play. This won’t look great, but I don’t think Revel is to blame on this rep. Teams that don’t play a lot of man can often look clumsy on these types of plays. His interception on the next possession though was very nice and showed him recovering and getting the ball again. This is a fun tape with challenges all over the field. Love the run support again. He wants in on the tackle. Likes to trail in his technique on verticals.
POSITIVES: He honestly has almost everything I look for in a NFL corner. He has great size and speed as well as length. Also, and maybe more importantly, he is a football player who wants to find contact and aggressiveness to bring a disposition that we sometimes don’t see in corners. He wants to get after you and tackle you with force. He has recovery speed and instincts for the ball.
CONCERNS: The issues are there. He cannot workout with an ACL recovery and also suffered a few high school injuries that tell you his body has taken some damage over time. It doesn’t seem to affect his tape, but he certainly has been through some things and his play-style says there will be a toll. Also, at East Carolina, we are sure he hasn’t seen the WR1’s of Sundays on a regular basis, so we have to project a bit.
OVERALL: I really like Revel and I love the adversity he has overcome to get here today, but I also confess that it would be important for the team medical staff to have a good look at his body to make sure he is 100% for training camp. But, for a team that wants some play-making in the secondary and to play physical in the zones, I would value him as a FIRST ROUND corner if all the medical stuff turns out.
Evaluation Scores (1-10):
  • Man skills - 8
  • Zone skills - 9
  • Mirror and match skills - 8
  • Blitzer - 8
  • Overall Ability against the run - 9
  • Ability against the pass - 8
  • Key and Diagnose - 8
  • Pursuit - 8
  • Tackling - 9
  • Hands - 8
  • Acceleration- catchup speed - 8

Fingers crossed on the knee but I think he is a legit outside starting corner.
I think so too. I am inclined to think this is Jaylon Smith again, but I like this player’s mental makeup quite a bit.

I like the player m'kay, but he'd never get a high first round grade from me at his age. No complaints at all in the third tho.

I get that, it's pretty hard to get a high first round grade from me at corner in general. But he did just turn 24. So at least he won't be a 25 year old rookie like Newman.

This was a weird year with all these covid players being a little older combined with the NIL making it worth staying in college as long as you can.

Grumpy McGinn scouts:

7. SHAVON REVEL, East Carolina (6-2, 200, no 40, 2): Compared by two scouts to Quinyon Mitchell, the Eagles’ first-round pick from Toledo last year and an all-rookie team corner. “Early on I said this could be Quinyon Mitchell,” said one scout. “He is tall and that length shows up. Explosive close as a straight-line athlete. Yeah, for a guy that tall, he’s going to get leggy at the top of a route and get segmented in transition. But he has rare stuff. For such a long guy he’s so explosive and fast. He displayed natural timing to make a play on the ball and high-point it. Probably my favorite thing about this guy was just how aggressive he was as a run defender. He throws his body around. He probably needs to protect himself a little bit more. You can tell: he loved it. This was a solid Day 2 guy.” That picture changed dramatically Sept. 18 in practice when he suffered a torn ACL; surgery was performed Oct. 15. “Before he got hurt he was trending to being a first-round corner so now maybe he goes in the second or third,” a second scout said. “He has a small body of work and it’s not against a ton of Power 4 teams. Impressive run with people. Able to play the ball. Strong tackler. Has a lot of high-level starter traits.” Spent 2020-’21 at a junior college but the first season was canceled and he played just six games in the second. Started 15 of 24 games for the Pirates from 2022-‘24, finishing with 70 tackles, three picks and 15 passes defensed. “I was hoping he’d get to an all-star game and then you could see what he looked like against top receivers and quarterbacks,” said a third scout. “I think about him and Mitchell. I wasn’t sold on Mitchell until the all-star game (Senior Bowl).” Three-star recruit from Winston-Salem, N.C. “Where he goes I don’t know, but he has first-round talent,” said a fourth scout. “He’s a late-bloomer. Hasn’t played a ton. He didn’t even know how good he was.” Arms were 32 5/8. Added a fifth scout: “ACL in September after three games. Seems to be a theme for this group. Raw, but he’s competitive. He’s going to start if he’s healthy.”

And Feldman's guys:

The biggest wild card of the cornerback class is ECU’s Shavon Revel, who had two picks in the first three games and then tore his ACL in practice and missed the rest of the season. He was exceptional in 2023, making 55 tackles, leading the team with 12 PBUs and blocking two kicks. He has great length, athleticism and physicality at 6-2, 194 with 32 5/8-inch arms.

“I’m very intrigued with him,” said DB coach No. 1. “He’s like a mix of Quinyon Mitchell and Tariq Woolen. He’s physical, but he has long speed. You can see him running across the field with ease. He’s got a big body, long arms, and can dominate the red line on outside release go balls because of how long he is and how physical he is

“His ball judgment/ball skills aren’t as good as you would like it. I think he can track it. To me, there’s a big difference between ball skills and the ability to track it. Ball skills is the ability to catch it. Tracking the ball is the ability to run full speed with your eyes back and be able to track it, which I think he can do. I like him. His film is even better than I thought it would be.”

“I’m probably lower on him than other coaches,” said DB coach No. 3. “There’s a lot of raw there. I didn’t see enough with him playing with his feet under him to really get excited about him.”

If he makes it back sound, it makes the Bland discussion a litle more interesting.

I think we are more likely to move on from Diggs. His tackling and physicality seems to be getting worse. His injuries keep happening. Just sort of feels like Eberflus isn't going to like his softness. He is going to want guys who can hold up against the run better.

It’s too bad he could never recover his magical 2021 form

It’s sounding like staying is shape is something he’s just not committed to

I don't know if staying in shape is the problem. I think the problem is the injuries and the way at which he attacks the rehab. An ACL injury is absolutely something an NFL player can come back 100% from. But if you half ass the rehab you may never be the same player. Supposedly that's really what happened to Gallup. His heart really just wasn't in the rehab. I think you're going to see the same with Diggs. And I hope I'm wrong because a healthy Diggs, Revel and Bland could make for a really special pass defense. I just don't think we will ever really get to see that. And much like receiver, Jerry isn't going to pay 2 corners. So we will pay Bland but then cut our losses with Diggs. At least we will have Revel on the cheap for the next 4 years hopefully.

Shit, I'd do it.
How much would Camo Hat value him?

Amazingly, they did not address their CB situation in the draft.

I know it is fashionable right now to swing on the Redskins’ nuts, but their draft did not frighten me.
