I’m a Mafah fan but chances are he’s not trucking anyone in the NFL and I’m a bit concerned about his overall speed. He’s definitely going to be a weapon down inside the 20 and 3rd and shorts. Now is he an every down back…no, but paired with Blue it can be an interesting option.
But it looks like the brain trust has finally caught on to the multi-back sets the NFL has been using for the last decade.
Yeah I don't think he will truck people like he did in college. Those are some of his most fun highlights but mostly a dude you want to get downhill and fall forward for the extra yard. He might truck a DB but most NFL LBers and Dlineman are too physical for that.
For his awful forty time he does seem to have some lateral agility. At least for a 230 pound dude he has some agility. I doubt he has the speed to be running much stretch or outside stuff. But our OC thinks he can do a lot of what James Connor does and I could see that.
Blue is the guy that I think can actually do everything. But you don't want to pound a guy like that into the ground. He can catch the corner and be gone. I actually think he works well up the gut. Has some decent break tackle for a little guy. But he works well in tight spaces. He has great change of direction and break away speed. He also looks like a receiver catching the ball.
With Booker, Beebe and Smith you have to think the biggest part of our running game is going to be between the tackles. And Mafah looks like a good fit for that.
