It's pretty simple, resign Dowdle and then spend one of our top 3 picks on a RB.

Someone like Sampson and Dowdle would be a great pair even if you wait until the 3rd, let alone someone like Jeanty in the first or Hampton/Johnson in the second.
Why re-sign him? I don't think he's even a good #2.

He can't make anyone miss or make more than what's given to him.

Let him walk.

He's definitely a good number 2, I'd be fine letting him go and potentially spending two picks on RB's given how deep the class is, but he's on pace for 1,000 rushing while being stuck in a timeshare with Elliott for half the year.

He's also a solid target out of the backfield, he's made a few plays down field (Steeler game for example) and has 3 receiving TD's.

I'm not going to be upset if we let him go but you can definitely win big with him as your RB2.

Pretty much agree, though that might be a little harsh. I do think he's okay as a #2, though I see guys like Guerendo who is a #3 and probably as good or even better than he is.

I'd be okay with him as a backup. I'd also be fine with letting him go as long as we make an effort to replace him with someone as good or better. What we can't do are the two extremes, pay him too much or let him go and replace him with some junky player during training camp.

I like Rico, and he's done well for the shitty hand he was dealt. But he's a dime a dozen back. I resign him if it's for the bare minimum just for the familiarity and it's with the understanding he's the #2. Otherwise he can walk and see if we can squeeze a 6-7 round comp pick.

I mean the last couple weeks I think he has shown some ability to make guys miss. But to me he is a #2. Still he seems to do best as he gets in a groove with more carries. Not sure he is the ideal guy for 5-10 touches a game either.

So I'm kind of indifferent. For cheap I'd keep him but otherwise he isn't worth it.

Here's the thing about Rico and why I don't necessarily agree that he's a good #2.

Good #2's are the ones that make people wonder if they're capable of being the #1 guy if given a heavier load.

Those are guys that in their limited role, they show flashes of a #1 and sometimes flash so much of it that it fools teams into thinking they are a #1. That almost never works out because these guys flash as #1's because of their limited touches and lack of film on them. But the point is, they at least show that sort of ability in their shared role.

Think Felix Jones, Marion Barber, Joseph Randle, Tony Pollard, etc.

These are guys who could make people miss or displayed impressive agility, break tackles and power their way to extra yardage, maximize the running room given them to break off long runs, and all could fill in as a starter when called upon and we didn't skip a beat offensively.

Rico does NONE of that.

At any point in time has Rico ever made anyone here believe that he could be a #1? Do you think there's NFL teams that are going to line up to sign him to be their starter?

Absolutely not.

So while the guy isn't awful or useless, you can find a better guy than him that actually brings some real ability to the table in the 5th round of the draft.

Let him walk, take the comp pick, and come back next year with two guys who both offer you more than he can and ever will.

Don't you know how Jerry thinks by now? He probably feels vindicated by Dowdle's last two games, and he'll certainly prefer a RB who's been in our system a few years to two unknowns.

The sad part is that you're probably right.

I don't disagree. But on the plus side you know if your starter gets hurt that Rico can potentially come in and give you 100-130 yards on the ground. Something you don't know off the bat with say a fifth round pick.

And the fact that you mention comp pick you at least think other teams would somewhat value what he can do. Even if they don't think of him as a potential #1.

I mean guy could still go over 1000 yards rushing this year with 4.5+ ypc. Nothing special but that's not awful either.
