But so far they haven't added anything that detracts from the appearance of the uniform. They've tweaked the shape and design of helmets but nothing silly looking like those shells.

So far is the key phrase. The fact that they are adding to the shells instead of leaving it just the basic color of the padding makes me think that it could be an option going forward. Probably only going to take a few more CTE lawsuits to make it so.

The NFL cares too much about the aesthetic look of their game. They fine players all the time for small things that detract from the uniforms' appearance. No way in hell they replace sleek looking helmets for those tacky looking shells.
