Yep, I'm sure if Cooper was making 10/year they may have held their noses for another season or two, but for whatever reason they were just done with him.

The cap was just used as a public excuse, but if you know how to read between the lines it's obvious they just wanted to get rid of him.
Didnt take us long to see that

This is exactly right and I'm really just not sure why. We may never know. That's the weird part as a fan, we just see what the guy looks like on the field and Cooper still looked like a legit #1 WR. 20 mil for that (We probably could have restructured his cap his down to under 10 mil), is not bad at all. But we were going to trade or cut him regardless. There is some reason we don't know about. And Cooper isn't enough of a diva to air any dirty laundry that could have caused it.

He pissed them off in several ways, just like Collins did.

Collins I at least sort of get. I mean there was some thought last year that he shouldn't be the RT when he did come back. His injuries over the last two years have been questionable. He has always had a bit of a lazy tag. Like ok, I could see some frustration with him and the organization clearly really likes Steele at RT. I get all that. Collins was never going to accept a backup role to Steele. So if Steele is your guy at RT, you move on from Collins.

Now what I don't agree on with Collins is just straight up cutting the guy. His salary wasn't that high and I absolutely believe a team would have kicked a pick to us for him. But we rushed to cut him for absolutely no reason.

Yep.

And they never learn. They made the same mistake with Collins, Cooper, Gregory, and all the way back Demarco Murray.

Fine if you want to move on from a guy.

But have a good replacement.

We can quibble on Steele as a replacement (I'm not a fan personally), but the fact that they think guys like Fowler, Washington and before this Randle are/were viable replacements is alarming.

Its hard to believe we didnt pursue serious trade offers for him. Especially with the oline challenged Bengals.

Yeah I absolutely hated Steele. I actually started to like him when he played RT last year. And then he played LT and that left a bad taste in my mouth. So I'm hopeful with him playing RT and at least know the guy has the work ethic to improve. But it's not something I feel great banking on either.

It's crazy to me. Especially since the Bengals paid him what it would have cost if they traded for him. They just never took our trade demands seriously.

And no we didn't need the post June 1 cap money. So that did nothing for us.

We seem to always make it very obvious we are going to cut a guy. When you do that you don't get anything for him.
