Penn State was dominating until their QB went out. Our backup QB is one of the worst I've ever seen.

No excuse for not having a better backup QB though. Pathetic.

The transfer portal has made it extremely difficult to keep 2 good QBs on the roster.

Your backup pretty much has to be some 2 or 3 star recruit who isn't too full of himself. Those are the guys who you can stash and develop. It's what Alabama did with Mac Jones.

That or your backup is a stud freshman or RS freshman. If they aren't going to start by their JR year they are usually out. Some even sooner.
