I'd imagine it's salary cap manipulation with an understanding that he'll be re-signed next year to probably substantially the same deal.

I wouldn't assume that it's automatic.

A year older and coming back from major injury, we could sign him for less, if at all.

My prediction is McCoy never suits up for the Cowboys. We'll take McCoy's money for next year and apply it elsewhere, like a different DL free agent. Or just draft another one.

I get the sense it's the end as well, but I don't understand why.

Maybe this was a 3 year deal that was really just a disguised 1 year deal, and based on their cap situation (which is not good) and the fact that they were able to draft Gallimore, they just said F it, we were gonna get out of this deal after a year anyway.

But after having heard how popular McCoy was in the locker room and how I really felt Poe was more the 1 year mercenary, this was quite surprising. I thought McCoy would come a nice little couple-year fixture there. I feel disappointed frankly.

Crazy how a guy we were majorly counting on isn't even on the team a day later.

I agree. I think if our DTs turn out to be a dumpster fire this season we might look to bring him back in 21. But otherwise, why would we? If someone like Gallimore or (gasp) Hill steps up, there's no point to having McCoy.

By all accounts he genuinely wanted to be here and was excited to be a Cowboy. Of course he's from relatively nearby OKC.

So if he heals well and we wanted to bring him back, there's a good chance we could do it.

After this offseason, plus the Griffen signing/McCoy release, if you had only followed this team for a year you’d almost swear they were a well run organization.

It's about damn time.
I saw Pearson in a few games when he was with Tulsa University. He came in as a QB but moved to receiver in short time. When he played there he didn’t appear much more than an average receiver however Dallas brought his best qualities.

There is not much out there at DT. As much as it sucks, we need Aldon Smith, Crawford, Hill and Gallimore to step up.

But we still have some talent there to make it work. The DT position over has taken a hit with COVID and opt outs.

We are not alone with challenges.
Even without McCoy we’re still ahead of last year’s team, not that that’s a huge achievement or anything.

But it’s something. Of course we’d all love Gallimore to be the guy, but that’s asking a lot. Hill is a long shot IMO. I think Crawford has something to prove though, and will at least be decent.

Fortunately we have pass rushers at both ends, and an anchor in Poe that consistently has made folks on either side of him better.

Even having lost McCoy I think the DL is simply better than last year.

I think 2020 Lawrence will be better than 2019 Lawrence. Even though he's a returning player, you cannot discount that he just had a down year. I think Everson Griffen will be better than Robert Quinn. Even if he doesn't put up 11 sacks, Quinn missed games and was not a complete player, and kinda would have a sack and then disappear. Griffen I think impacts the game way more often, and hopefully Lawrence's production increase will make up for the raw sack number discrepancy (ie, if Griffen only has 8 instead of 11, hopefully Lawrence has 8 instead of 5).

Poe is better than Woods who started at 1T for us last year. Woods is now a backup.

And I think some combination of Aldon Smith on pass rushing downs plus Gallimore and a healthy Crawford are at least the equal of Maliek Collins. Probably significantly more, frankly.

Our DT rotation last year was basically Collins, Woods, and Christian Covington (Trysten Hill gave us zero, nothing). Yeesh.

This year it's Poe, Woods, Gallimore, Crawford, a percentage of Aldon Smith, and whatever Hill gives us. Even with McCoy out that's way better.

And DE also should be better. Last year our rotation was Tank Lawrence in a down year, Robert Quinn, Dorance Armstrong, Kerry Hyder and Michael Bennett. This year it's hopefully rebounded Tank Lawrence, Everson Griffen, Aldon Smith, Bradley Anae, Dorance Armstrong, and maybe even Randy Gregory.
