A couple of decent drafts have you thinking the corner is being turned, then they take Jerrah off of his meds. Okay, there are still picks to be made so maybe that's a little harsh but still.
Good stuff, but I am really struggling to see how the competition UConn faces makes this seem amazing.
http://www.reddit.com/r/NFL_Draft/comments/335sa8/the_byron_jones_allowed_a_263_passer_rating_last/I've heard it claimed that CB Byron Jones CONNECTICUT only allowed a 26.3 passer rating last year. It's starting to get thrown around a lot, so I think it's time to stop and put some perspective to that number.
Last year, Jones only played in 7 games before getting injured (and he was injured in the first half of the 7th game). The teams he played against: BYU (27th in passing yards/game), Stony Brook (Unkown), Boise St (24th), USF (97th), Temple (88th), Tulane (87th), and then the first half of the East Carolina game (3rd). That's not exactly a list of powerhouses.
The QB's faced that correlate with each school respectively are Christian Stewart (138.99 rating), Stony Brook QB (Unknown), Grant Hedrick (157.19 rating), Mike White (112.42 rating), PJ Walker (107.75 rating), backup Nick Montana (89.91 rating), and Shane Carden (140.81 rating) until Jones got injured. (All ratings are season-long ratings.)
So out of less than 6.5 games, Jones played a game against a backup, a game against Stony Brook, and a couple of games against some marginal starters. Grant Hedrick is probably the best QB Jones played against, and he's projected as the #20 QB by CBSsports (#405 overall) as the #5 UDFA not including the five 7-FA ranked players.
The thing that compounds this injury issue a little bit is that Byron Jones played S his Freshman and Sophomore years, so he really only has about a year-and-a-half of experience. There are some good things about him, but that's scary for a guy being projected in the 1st round. I think his tape is much better than that of Collins out of LSU, but that says more about Collins than Jones. Overall, this 26.3 allowed passer rating stat is getting blown way out of proportion.
This helps our cap tremendously. That's the way I'm looking at it right now. I've already admitted I never watched UConn play. The problem is in the highlights I watched half the time his back was to the ball. Reminds me way too much of the Newman hands in the air flailing defense.Jones isn't a popular pick....but even in the few highlight reels you see on him he's probably better than Carr or Claiborne.
Ok...probably better than Carr, and definitely better than Claiborne.
Awesome. Can't wait for that shit show.I think Jones has Newman type ball skills.
This kid is not a Newman. He looks to play the ball well. This helps our cap tremendously. That's the way I'm looking at it right now. I've already admitted I never watched UConn play. UCFGood stuff, but I am really struggling to see how the competition UConn faces makes this seem amazing.
When you watch the highlights you'll see multiple plays were he just never gets his head around.Awesome. Can't wait for that shit show.
So you are saying you would not take Newman at 27 in this draft?Awesome. Can't wait for that shit show.
Yeah I noticed that but he was never flailing around he always seemed under control and in step. When you watch the highlights you'll see multiple plays were he just never gets his head around.
He actually reminds me of Newman in a lot of ways. Not just the workout numbers. IThis kid is not a Newman. He looks to play the ball well.
I agree he's a workout warrior, but having 4.3 speed and a huge vertical isn't a negative at CB.
Yeah, a very meh pick. I'd have preferred a dlineman, but I'm not getting bent out of shape over this. Jones should help at a position of need. We pretty much have to go dline\rb on the next 2 picks now thoughEh. Not who I would have taken, but I'm not going to flip out over it. As much as I would have rather we took Gregory or Brown, we also need CB pretty badly. And I do think this guy will be a good player. Not pissed. Not happy. Just... eh. Whatever.
I hope he's not a Newman or a Claiborne. He actually reminds me of Newman in a lot of ways. Not just the workout numbers. I
I hope I'm wrong and he turns into Devin McCourty instead.
