You can't build a culture of accountability around a sensitive ass head coach who always thinks everything is someone else's fault.

Nothing wrong with a solid core of experienced coaches, as long as they all want to work together and don't start setting up cliques. The fact that you can connect the dots and see where these coaches connect makes that fairly likely.

Funny you mention that. If I could pick anyone to be the DC, it would be Rex.

I read that was an idea Tex Schramm brought to the organization.

Dom Capers was the DC on his Super Bowl winning team. People are saying Mike Nolan though.

This is the thing about McCarthy that most interests me.

Nolan has done a lot of both, he coached 4-3 under Dan Reeves in NY. Admittedly I have a soft spot for him because of the Landry Tree connections. He's coached good defenses before, I wouldn't be averse to the hire.

Mike McCarthy hired as next Cowboys head coach

It really isn't. Romo had to be the OC from the line of scrimmage most of the time and he never got beyond running "Coryell for Dummies" as a playbook. I could name a few dozen coaches that were out of work at the time that could have been dusted off and would have come in and done a better job...

Mike McCarthy hired as next Cowboys head coach

Why would they when he was the worst OC in the league when he was one?

Mike McCarthy hired as next Cowboys head coach

Only technically true. Don Shula won the NFL championship in Baltimore before going to Miami.

I could dig that as well.

Mike McCarthy hired as next Cowboys head coach

I would have agreed, there are a certain number of SB winning head coaches who only take that next job to dine out on past accomplishments and go through the motions. I'd have suspected him of being one of those, but the article about him embracing a data-based approach and working to improve...

Mike McCarthy hired as next Cowboys head coach

I'd be pretty happy with a McCarthy hire. it'd be interesting to see what kind of staff he could pull together.

Mike McCarthy hired as next Cowboys head coach

Considering that article about analytics said he had been working with Jim Haslett, I'd say he was the more likely DC choice.

Like I said, I haven't seen a game since Thanksgiving 2016. I was just making a point about playbooks and how you can draw up any play and number the routes Coryell style or give them names Erhardt Perkins style.

At this point the systems are more about jargon than offensive philosophy. You can design any offense out of the 3 major systems, it's just how the plays, positions and formations are named/numbered/described that varies.

Landry called plays more often than he didn't, actually. Don Meredith called his own plays, Dan Reeves called plays for a while, but Landry called his own after Reeves got a HC gig until the mid 80s when he let Paul Hackett take over play calling for a while (then took it back).
