No Cowboys draft thread? :shrug

Anyway, isn't last year the first year McCarthy didn't go to the Combine? IIRC, anyway.

Not saying that's to blame for last year's poor draft, but seems like you might go back to the way you were doing it before. This seems strange regardless.

I don't get this like, can't you spare a few minutes to be at the combine?

I just remember last year he didn't go and they said it was because Mike was now the OC and he had to go over the new scheme with the coaches, etc. That seemed bogus then and this does now.

Makes me wonder if there's some friction with the scouting staff or something. Not much else makes sense.

The draft has been a big deal to me for a long time and I will say blasphemy now.

Our track record at drafting “well” during the McClay era is a mirage.

I would say so with the exception of the first round. Guess that blinds most folks but you have to find players throughout the rounds now. Being stupid like we were last year can stunt your growth if you don't dabble in the FA market.

We have one of the best regular season records over the last decade in the league while doing literally nothing in free agency, we've drafted very well (relatively) under McClay, it's just that last year was a shit show.

I do not get what last year was all about is because we literally had no visible signs of a real plan around any player other than Overshown.

But we draft well because they are still in the organization.

In terms of day 3 I'd put Dak, Ferguson, Bland, Schultz, Armstrong, Biadasz, Anthony Brown, Pollard, Donovan Wilson, and Cedrick Wilson up against anything any other team in the league has done over the last decade.

That's basically finding a borderline Pro Bowler every other year on day 3 with several decent starters mixed in.

The problem is the 2nd round when they go off the reservation.

Relatively.

It still does not register in terms of impact.

Yeah, we don’t suck at getting players cheaply via the draft. It is that we overvalue draftees. This has been a known issue for a long time.

I suspect the impact is because the organization is such a cluster fuck from the top down, put our exact same rosters over the last decade in SF or something and I'm certain they'd have at least made a NFCC.

There has to be a more focused effort on the psychological/intelligence profiles of these potential picks. Far too much emphasis over the years has been put on Relative Athletic Score. Too many retards have been selected because of this.

Playing in Dallas is a different beast. You have to have the ice in the veins to play here and not have the pressure affect you. Especially at QB.

Yeah I think we are a great drafting team. It's the only reason a turd like Garrett was able to win games. Sure we miss. Everyone misses. It's like saying a batter who bats .400 sucks because he misses on 6 out of 10 at bats. We suck at getting extra draft resources (extra picks), we don't sign free agents and prior to McCarthy we had one of the worst head coaches in the NFL. Yeah the only thing keeping this team from the dregs was great drafting. We don't have a Shannahan or McVay to prop dudes up.

I want to say you can't judge a draft after only one year. But yeah, last year feels like a mess regardless. But that hasn't been the normal.

And margins are thin on the draft. If Mazi wasn't a miss and Overshown didn't get hurt, it would have probably looked like a good draft.

Retarded. We have one of the better teams over the last ten or whatever years. Consider that while realizing we were saddled with Jason Garrett at the beginning of that run, and doing absolutely NOTHING in free agency. How else did we acquire the horses to do that? Yeah, we haven't advanced past the divisional round. But that's more attributed to only being strong in one area of talent acquisition, while basically ignoring the others.

I know you hate to admit anything good for the Cowboys, but we have drafted well. Sorry.

Drafting "well" means there is flow and it fits. We have issues organizationally that make whatever we do in the draft minimalized because of our approach.

We draft in response to the coaching staff's whims too much at times. Now we seem to have an obsession from McClay with Michigan players. And Iowa ones too, but not the positions they are good at producing.
