Broncos request permission to speak with Quinn for HC

per Shefter.

F it, let him go. I'm all in on Payton/Fangio anyhow.

I would be in on Payton but the Saints want a first round pick. It's because he RESIGNED from the Saints, he wasn't fired. And so they have him under contract until 2024.

Nope, not giving a first round pick, sorry.

Definitely don't want to lose Quinn, I remember how bad they were before he was hired.

I'm not too concerned if he goes really. The defense has been average for the past 6 weeks or so and there are plenty of really good candidates who we could hire to replace him who I'm sure would love to coach guys like Parsons and Diggs.

Off the top of my head you have Steve Wilks, Ejiro Evero, Vance Joseph (assuming Kingsbury is fired), Gus Bradley (assuming they don't keep Saturday) and possibly Ron Rivera depending on what happens there. You can even throw Zimmer in there, I know most won't like that name but he was one of the top defensive minds in the league for about 10 years before he was fired in Minnesota.

If we lose to Tampa I'd give it at least a 33% chance that McCarthy is fired and Jerry does whatever it takes to hire Payton. Those odds only increase if Quinn leaves.

Fangio would be awesome of course.

And Lovie Smith too.

The shine is definitely off Quinn. I'd rather keep him but assuming we replace him with a competent hire we'll be fine.

Yep, all things being equal I'd rather keep him of course assuming McCarthy is back next year, but any of those guys mentioned would be perfectly fine replacements.

If the defense had maintained it's level of play from the first half of the year losing him would be freak-out worthy, but they've been kind of meh and slow to adjust to offenses gameplanning around our pass rush.

Yeah, we're far better than two years ago obviously but we have mostly new players since then also, especially Parsons.

So I think a good DC would do just fine here.

BTW, I actually expect Joe Whitt would get the job. Saw him interviewed and he seems like a DC and ready for a promotion (and not every assistant does). But he's a pretty impressive guy IMO.

That's negotiable. If Payton tells them he isn't signing with anyone else and the Cowboys won't give up the 1st, they'll drop the price. They won't hold Payton hostage through the contract.

I'm not down on McCarthy yet. The only thing he hasn't done is take the play sheet away from Moore and walk him to the door, and I think thats coming once we are out of the playoffs.

Give him a real OC and lets see what he can do. Jerry handicapped McCarthy with Moore, just like he did Fat Wade with Garrett.

Yes sir, I'd like to see what he could do with a seasoned OC.

No chance I'd do that. Maybe I'm underrating Payton but I don't see there being much difference from McCarthy. Certainly not enough to warrant a significant pick.
Peyton is a drastically better coach than McCarthy. He would also be in an negotiating position where he could bring all his guys in. He’s a big enough name, ala Parcells, who could change the culture here immediately. Send the pick to NO and get it done.
