Yeah but I like Shakir more and he is still around. I'd be totally ok double dipping at WR. We won't until maybe the fifth or sixth at best. But still.
Yeah. I agree. I expect Shakir to go pretty early tomorrow. Or at least he should.

He probably won't get drafted, but I really like Samuel Akem from the Montana Grizz. I would be on the phone with him early tomorrow and make him a priority UDFA.

Jalen Tolbert: 146/2,559/16 TD's over his last 2 seasons
Michael Gallup: 176/2,690/21 TD's over his last 2 seasons

Tolbert: 6-1, 194, 4.49 40, 36 vertical, 123 broad, 7.08 3 cone
Gallup: 6-1, 205, 4.51 40, 36 vertical, 122 broad, 6.95 3 cone

Pretty wild how identical the two are, and it's also why I really didn't want a WR in the 1st. I'd much rather have Tyler Smith and Tolbert/Shakir than Burks and Sean Rhyan or some such.

Press Conference:

Stephen Jones: I wouldn't call the positions we drafted as 'musts' but definitely could be improved. Looking for help in three positions with our first pick in the 2nd, and one player was taken, leaving two positions of help remaining.

Yea I'd very seriously consider double dipping either at WR with Shakir or on the OL with Salyer and maybe even Kinnard.

But right now most of my top guys available are TE's, so it might just work out that way. I'd absolutely love Kolar or Likely, but Otton or even Bellinger would be fine too.

I'd really love going Coby Bryant or Tariq Woolen at CB too.
Yeah, I love Salyer.

My list for tomorrow goes something like:

Winfrey- DT
Uwazurike- DT
Khalil Shakir- WR
Coby Bryant- CB
Charlie Kolar- TE
Jamaree Salyer- OG/OT
Cade Otton- TE
Darian Kinnard- OG/OT
Isaiah Spiller- RB
Matthew Butler- DT
Abram Smith- RB
Zyon McCollum- CB
Tariq Woolen- CB
Enagbare- DE
Brandon Smith- ILBer

A number of these guys I'm really surprised are still left. A number of them I think could be starters in the NFL relatively soon.

A guy I wouldn't be surprised if we took at all either would be Dawson Deaton. One of the best centers left in the draft and I believe he was a 30 visit. If we double dip on the O-line I think it is probably most likely a guy who can compete at center.

Tolbert is terrific value in the 3rd round. He excelled despite a crappy OL and average QB play

Yeah I said it earlier, he reminds me a lot of Gallup when we also drafted him in the third. Just a good all around receiver.

Will McClay: Sam Williams is a pass rusher. Have to get QB pressure in today's game. Has WR speed and length as a pass rusher. Can also play the run. Productive vs SEC is worth. mentioning. Extremely intelligent. Versatility to play inside and outside. Had good rapport with Dak Prescott

Stephen Jones: We liked some of the pass rushers drafted before Sam Williams, but we didn't like them more than Sam Williams. Afterwards, the Kentucky pass rusher is a player we also liked.

That's more or less my list, I'd also add:

Darrian Beavers
Hassan Haskins
Neil Farrell
Isaiah Likely
Daniel Bellinger
Dominique Robinson
Amare Barno
Isaiah Thomas
Micheal Clemons
David Anenih
Otito Ogbonnia
Mike Rose
Verone McKinley
Tariq Castro-Fields
Zach Tom
Alec Lindstrom

My top 5 in the 4th are Winfrey, Salyer, Coby Bryant, Kolar and Shakir, in no order.

Williams is a top 5 pure edge rusher in the draft, if you're ignoring the run.

Which I'm fine with, that's why we have schlubs like Armstrong and Golston around, and you can always draft 5T types who can stuff the run and kick inside in nickel/dime later in the draft. Just put him on the edge 25 or so times a game, get me 6-8 sacks a year and I'm happy.

I think he was talking about DeAngelo Malone from Western Kentucky.

I certainly think with his size and strength he can improve against the run and play more. He isn't one of these 240-250 pound dudes. He is thick and pretty strong. I think he needs some coaching to improve his run defense but I actually think he is pretty much exactly what you look for in a RE.

Mike McCarthy: I like Jalen's position switch - returnability, play inside/outside, play in the backfield.

They knew they were getting Williams in the second which is why they ignored Johnson to get the Mohican. Makes sense.

Really like both picks today, so long as there’s no truth to the Williams character issues and the team has done their homework on him.

Yea I hate that thought process though, it's a very dangerous game to play.

With all that said, I can't complain too much about what we ended up with. I appreciate that they put an emphasis on reinforcing the trenches after spending about 4 picks in the top 3 rounds on CB's the last 2 years.

McCarthy: You see Jalen run all the routes - vertical, crossing, etc. Has inside/outside WR flex. Runs the whole route tree. Work ethic impressive. Will be a full complementary WR for us. We play on astroturf a lot. Can never have enough speed when you play on that surface as much as we do.

Stephen Jones: We see the draft as not the right time for veteran players. Last night was an eye-opener -- surprising me -- with all the shopping and trades. We usually see a big discount in value for veterans when trading day of draft cuz a team is aiming to get a specific prospect. We think trading after the draft reaps better value since you're talking about trading your player for next year's draft.

I agree. The draft is not a substitute for free agency. I understand drafting for need in the first round if all else is relatively equal.

But they stretched it into rounds 2 and 3. End of the day, there isn’t a whole lot of difference between the middle of the second and the same point in the third— this year.

Jerruh: You have to think if you're able to live without a particular player and, if you aren't, you gotta be prepared to overpay to get him. It's like Mike Tyson said, a lot of good boxers out there but you don't know if you're a good boxer until you get hit in the nose. There's a lot of truism in that when it comes to this. Just in the hallway, we had a conversation if we wanted to give up two players for one. This is when you know you're ready for this.

I don't know if Sam Williams was as much a draft for need as it was just a player that the Quinn and the Cowboys really fell in love with. And I get why, there is a lot to love about the guy.

Tolbert fit a position of need but I could easily argue he was the best available at that point in the draft. He was a second round WR in my book. I think I mentioned it during the second round, he was my guy right behind Watson and Pickens. So I was really happy to see him last until our third. He is going to outpace a lot of WR's who were drafted before him in my opinion.
