The immediate problem I see with that letter, if there is one, is that there only appear to be 2, maybe 3, male POCs listed among the UC Berkeley history department staff (though an additional 2 also do not have headshots). Supposing the letter could be written by a woman (it's tenor feels like not, but perhaps), there could be another 4-5 women on the staff that seem to count as POCs.

Gonna be pretty easy to narrow down who wrote it, or conversely, to ascertain if it actually wasn't written by a UC Berkeley Dept of History Professor.
Honestly I thought it sounded like a woman wrote it, not sure why I think that.

Yeah, that letter is outstanding, but unfortunately I have serious doubts it's even real. Maybe I'm that jaded, but it's hard to imagine anyone from Berkeley having those viewpoints.
I agree it's hard to imagine coming from Berkeley, but at the same time it's not hard to imagine that maybe the reason is that anyone with a dissenting viewpoint fears for their job so we don't hear about them.

I just wonder if they kept their name off of it because of fear or reprisal from their peers. That would make it make more sense that it came from a faculty member at Berkeley.

I'm with you buddy, sounded too convenient to be anonymous while also claiming to be black, very well written though and not in the vein of the typically hysterical extremes

sadly, I feel we have to be skeptical of everything these days, especially if it comes from the internet

Thats pretty much what is said in the first paragraph of the letter, no?

I am one of your colleagues at the University of California, Berkeley. I have met you both personally but do not know you closely, and am contacting you anonymously, with apologies. I am worried that writing this email publicly might lead to me losing my job, and likely all future jobs in my field.

Being skeptical of who wrote doesn't distort the overall message it conveys.

So Mike Gundy wore an OAN t-shirt fishing and now his star running back says that's unacceptable, he won't stand for it, and he won't be doing anything with the team until things change.

I guess now your career is over for watching the wrong TV channel. :doh

No doubt.

I guess I don't get why OAN is so evil, though. I heard Craig Miller on the Ticket railing on OAN, apparently because John Oliver was bashing it. I'd barely heard of it until then, so I watched some. Saw nothing wrong with it. During the day it's mostly just boring world news clips, not opinions. Not familiar with their opinion people, but I've watched Liz Wheeler during the virus craze and it was a good show, mostly digging into foreign studies on the virus. What I saw was much less political than Fox.

I know they lean right, but acting like simply watching it is tantamount to not caring about black people is absurd. It's certainly not worth threatening a football coach over it.

I haven't the slightest idea what OAN is. I never heard of it until your post.

What I do know is that it's an extremely big problem that so many people are so intent on censoring others and curtailing dissent from their own personal narrative.

Every single one of these people can fuck right off.
