I don't live the McCarthy hire but I don't hate it either.
Here's how I see it -- McCarthy is a competent NFL HC and that alone makes him a significant upgrade over Garrett.
I don't see him being great enough to be a coach that assures us of 3 or 4 consecutive seasons of playoff appearances, but he's also not bad enough to never make the playoffs in consecutive seasons during a 9 year stretch like Garrett did.
I think he's good enough to win a SB with, but not good enough to make us a consistent SB contender.
Put it this way, if you give McCarthy the 2007, 2014, or 2016 teams? I think he at least gets them to the NFCC and very likely the SB. Those teams just needed competent coaching and not the type that served as a hindrance to the team, especially those latter two.
So if we can put that sort of team around him, I think we might finally get to the big game again.
I think McCarthy is more than just a competent head coach, he's probably an above-average head coach. But at the end of the day there's not a huge difference between average and above average. Being an elite, top coach is what puts teams over the edge.
He's a guy I had a much higher opinion of once upon a time, but his last few years in Green Bay and the way it appears he clashed with Rodgers at the end, combined with my co-worker being a Packers fan and telling me some of his flaws, I've cooled on him a bit.
He'd be fine, but at the end of the day, he's not the kind of guy you see breaking historical precedent and winning a Super Bowl with a second NFL team. Certainly not when that second team is owned by Jerry Jones.
For me to feel like we've really gotten a guy who is gonna move the needle, I think there has to be some sort of outstanding quality for the next coach, something you can say, "This is something where he has an edge over everyone else." McCarthy is just.... good. Ish.
I also don't know if I agree that McCarthy by himself propels the 2007, 2014 or 2016 teams to the Championship game or beyond. You are gonna see what flaws he has to accompany his strengths in short order if he's hired.
