Would seem to be McCarthy if true.

Jerry is apparently foolishly only considering guys with NFL HC experience, so McCarthy has that and his resume is better than Lewis or whatever other retreads they're considering. I'm sure he'd be open to keeping all/most of Jerry's pet cats on the coaching staff (Moore, Colombo, etc.) and he's available right now.

It'd be disappointing if they seemingly out of hand rule out guys like Roman, Saleh, Campbell, Bieniemy, etc. just because they don't have HC experience, but of course Jerry has never been one to make sound, logical decisions.

I don't love the McCarthy hire but I don't hate it either.

Here's how I see it -- McCarthy is a competent NFL HC and that alone makes him a significant upgrade over Garrett.

I don't see him being great enough to be a coach that assures us of 3 or 4 consecutive seasons of playoff appearances, but he's also not bad enough to never make the playoffs in consecutive seasons during a 9 year stretch like Garrett did.

I think he's good enough to win a SB with, but not good enough to make us a consistent SB contender.

Put it this way, if you give McCarthy the 2007, 2014, or 2016 teams? I think he at least gets them to the NFCC and very likely the SB. Those teams just needed competent coaching and not the type that served as a hindrance to the team, especially those latter two.

So if we can put that sort of team around him, I think we might finally get to the big game again.

I have mixed feelings.

I long advocated knowing who your guy was and then going and getting him. Before firing your old coach, if necessary.

So if this has been their game since during the season, and it's someone like Riley all along, then fine.

But this instead feels like they've intereviewed 2 guys and now are done. That would be insane.

If it was an actual search, then interviewing 2 guys is not enough. Also, if it wasn't an actual search, but instead they knew all along who they wanted, then I also question their sanity if that guy was McCarthy. Really, they were pining after him all along?? Seems kinda stupid, McCarthy is not Parcells or Belichick.

I'd be ok with the hire because I think McCarthy is a decent enough risk as coach, but I'd hate the process of getting there, once again proving the ridiculous dysfunction in Dallas.

I think McCarthy will be the hire.

I think Meyer is the potential home run, but he's far riskier just based on historically the jump from college is littered with failure.

McCarthy has proven he can win a championship in the NFL with the right roster. There isn't a ceiling like there seems to be with a guy like Garrett.

Yes, McCarthy had Rodgers. But come to mention it, Belichick never won a championship without Brady, Johnson never won without Aikman, Walsh never won without Montana, Landry never won without Staubach, Noll never won without Bradshaw, Shanahan never won without Elway. I mean, it's actually pretty unusual for a HC to win without a good QB.
Commitment to running the ball is suspect, but he definitely supports a strong defense and is great with WRs and offense. Personality wise Dak is the anti-Rodgers, so there’s that.

This is pretty much how I feel. I would like the hire, but not the lack of due diligence in the search.

I think McCarthy is more than just a competent head coach, he's probably an above-average head coach. But at the end of the day there's not a huge difference between average and above average. Being an elite, top coach is what puts teams over the edge.

He's a guy I had a much higher opinion of once upon a time, but his last few years in Green Bay and the way it appears he clashed with Rodgers at the end, combined with my co-worker being a Packers fan and telling me some of his flaws, I've cooled on him a bit.

He'd be fine, but at the end of the day, he's not the kind of guy you see breaking historical precedent and winning a Super Bowl with a second NFL team. Certainly not when that second team is owned by Jerry Jones.

For me to feel like we've really gotten a guy who is gonna move the needle, I think there has to be some sort of outstanding quality for the next coach, something you can say, "This is something where he has an edge over everyone else." McCarthy is just.... good. Ish.

I also don't know if I agree that McCarthy by himself propels the 2007, 2014 or 2016 teams to the Championship game or beyond. You are gonna see what flaws he has to accompany his strengths in short order if he's hired.

Not a fan of his playoff record either, given the talent he had.

I guess if he were better, he’d still be in Green Bay.

This worries me, but at the very least McCarthy seems pretty hungry and self-reflective right now.

He's done that though. Sure it doesn't guarantee it would happen here, but he's literally done it so he's capable. I believe it was 8 consecutive playoffs?

...Or back further, to the NFC Championship Game on Jan. 18, 2015, when McCarthy coached with the ferocity of a sloth, calling for field goals from the 1-yard line twice in the first half and then running three straight times with five minutes left to infuriate his QB and effectively euthanize a Super Bowl season?

What Happened in Green Bay (McCarthy Post-Mortem)

It's actually not all that bad historically. Same winning percentage as Landry in fact. 17th all time in wins.

As an aside, Tony Dungy is in the hall with a below .500 playoff winning percentage. (Edit: in fairness so is bud grant.)
