What's with the facepalm? This might have been the smartest public comment he's made in 20 years.

Really, not even the team docs have any idea about his rehab?

How can they know if he's apparently rehabbing in other places?
Which is retarded, unless they have already given up hope on him coming back at all.

Jerry: Unknown when Ratliff will be ready
October, 9, 2013

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Owner/general manager Jerry Jones, who made the mistake this summer of declaring that he was sure Jay Ratliff would be ready for the season opener, is steering clear of any firm projections about the former Pro Bowl nose tackle’s return from the physically unable to perform list.

“I don’t know, and I don’t know that he knows,” Jones said Tuesday on KRLD-FM. “I don’t know that anybody knows. He is beginning to work through on what we all hope is a secure injury area that has hopefully healed. I don’t know that. I can’t speak to that, and I don’t know that anybody does.

“We will painstakingly go slow here in trying to work him back in.”

Ratliff, who is still recovering from a sports hernia surgery he had in December, is eligible to come off the PUP list Monday. The Cowboys could wait as late as Nov. 4. Once Ratliff is activated from the PUP list, the Cowboys would have three weeks to practice him before putting him on the 53-man roster or sidelining him, so his season debut could come as soon as next week or as late as Thanksgiving.

Ratliff, who has clashed with Cowboys management and the team medical, athletic training and strength/conditioning staffs over the last year, did not rehabilitate at the team’s Valley Ranch facility this offseason. Coach Jason Garrett said Ratliff has split his in-season rehab work between Valley Ranch and an off-site location.

The depleted Dallas defensive line could desperately use some help from Ratliff, a four-time Pro Bowler whose sack totals have declined for five straight seasons, bottoming out with zero during his injury-shortened 2012 campaign.

Nick Hayden, who had played a total of 33 snaps in the previous two NFL seasons, is starting in Ratliff’s place. Both backup defensive tackles, Drake Nevis and David Carter, have been signed since the season started.

Miles Austin to practice today
October, 9, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin will return to practice Wednesday for the first time since straining a hamstring in a Sept. 22 win against the St. Louis Rams, according to a source.

Austin missed the last two games -- losses to the San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos -- but has improved to the point where he could return Sunday against the Washington Redskins. Austin is expected to take part in a limited part of practice, but he should take some team snaps.

Austin was hurt in the third quarter of the Rams’ win, and at the time coach Jason Garrett said the strain was not as severe as those that limited Austin in 2011 and ’12. He missed six games in 2011 with hamstring strains to both legs, and while he did not miss a game last season he was not at full strength.

Rookie Terrance Williams has replaced Austin in the past two games and had 11 catches for 222 yards and an 82-yard touchdown.

Austin has 15 catches for 125 yards on the season.

Amazing. His replacement shows life and all the sudden he's ready to go.

Crazy how that works, isn't it?

He was barely jogging just two days ago and now he can practice in team drills.

Funny how Austin is suddenly practicing now that it looks like he could be in danger of losing his starting spot if Williams keeps putting up these kind of numbers.

I'd love to see if we could trade Austin. Now is the perfect time to try to get a pick or two for him and I think we saw that he is no longer vital to this offense.

I'd make that turd earn his starting spot back. Why bench a younger WR coming off a 150 plus yard day and his breakout game.

Austin Returns To Practice, Hatcher Sits; More News
Posted 11 minutes ago

David Helman
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas – Miles Austin returned to pads Wednesday for the first time since the Cowboys’ Week 3 win against St. Louis.

Austin has been battling a hamstring injury for the past two weeks, but he was able to participate in practice during Wednesday’s open media session. He worked with the team in the early going, running routes and catching balls from the quarterback.

The Cowboys have been anticipating Austin’s return and Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said during his morning press conference he expected the wideout to get some work in.

“We anticipate him doing something today, and hopefully he is feeling good early on in practice and can do more and more,” Garrett said.

Jason Hatcher took Austin’s place on the sideline. The defensive tackle suffered a stinger late in Sunday’s loss to the Broncos and was unsure if he’d be able to practice Wednesday. That question appeared to be answered when Hatcher appeared in shorts with no helmet.

His linemate, DeMarcus Ware, worked out in full pads, however. Ware has limited himself to just shorts and a helmet the past few weeks as he coped with various injuries, but he was in full uniform Wednesday.

Other injury casualties of the Wednesday practice include Justin Durant and Edgar Jones, who continue to work back from groin injuries. The duo did conditioning off to the side of the practice.

“We’re hopeful he can move around as the week goes on and play in this ballgame,” said Garrett of Durant.

Lance Dunbar, who strained his hamstring against the Broncos, was not at practice.

The Cowboys went through the morning practice with one empty spot on the active roster after the release of Will Allen on Tuesday. Garrett said a combination of factors led to that move – mainly the coaches’ impression of the rookie development at safety.

“J.J. Wilcox has been our starter for the last couple of weeks and Jeff Heath has been a guy who has really emerged throughout training camp and the early part of this season, so we want to give those guys an opportunity to play,” Garrett said. “We still have a veteran back there in Danny McCray, who has played for us in the past. We felt like a combination of all those things, trying to give those guys an opportunity -- we felt it was the right time to do this.”

There has been no word on what the Cowboys plan to do with the available roster spot, though it’s possible they could elevate a member of their practice squad. Garrett said the team will likely make that decision based on injury concerns.

“We have a couple things in mind as we go here over the course of the week, and some of it has to do with injury and who might be available to us,” he said.

You rarely see that kind of thing happen, but I agree.

Give Austin more limited reps in the slot, since he's made of glass.

If Julio is down for the year I'd call Atlanta and see if they'll bite.

BTW....as good as Julio has been I still think Atlanta f'd up the 2011 draft.

They went all in on Julio giving up all those draft picks for a WR, when what they really needed was to invest in their defense so they could slow down teams like Green Bay and New Orleans.

Isn't that how Austin got his spot originally? What goes around comes around.
