Rosario Dealt To Bears For 7th Round Pick; Leary Back At Practice

Posted 3 minutes ago

David Helman DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas –The Cowboys traded tight end Dante Rosario to Chicago for a 2014 seventh round pick Monday morning ahead of the first practice of the regular season.

Rosario joined the team in early June and worked through the duration of training camp before being dealt to the Bears. This latest trade comes one day after the Cowboys traded defensive tackle Sean Lissemore to San Diego for a 2015 seventh round pick.

The move leaves the Cowboys with four tight ends on the current roster, as they held on to Jason Witten, James Hanna, Gavin Escobar and Andre Smith during the weekend’s roster cuts.

Meanwhile, guard Ronald Leary checked back into practice for the first time in several weeks as the Cowboys began preparation for the season opener against the New York Giants. The Cowboys began their morning session with Doug Free and Mackenzy Bernadeau starting at guard before Leary shuffled into the lineup at right guard. Leary took snaps with both Free and Bernadeau.

While Leary returned to work on Labor Day, two other prominent Cowboys were absent from Monday’s practice, which took place only in shells and shorts. Defensive end Anthony Spencer, who missed all of training camp with a knee injury, was still unavailable, as was running back Lance Dunbar, who injured his foot in the Aug. 17 preseason game against Arizona.

Safeties Danny McCray (hamstring) and Eric Frampton (calf) also missed Monday’s practice.

It took dealing with a GM who traded for a QB with a hint of Downs, but it worked.
Phil Emery doesn't strike me as that dumb though, that's what is weird.

It is interesting how Jones' trading pattern works lately. He rarely, if ever, deals with older more experienced GMs.

Guys like Ozzie Newsome probably fart in his and Stephen's general direction when they call.

He's ripped off guys like Phil Savage when he was new, got schooled big time by Martin Mayhew when he was brand new. The trades with Dorsey (well also Reid), Telesco in SD and now Emery are first or second year guys.

So two of our safeties we just couldn't live without because of their special teams prowess are dinged up? We're doomed.

And seriously, how many guys on this roster are just here because their good on special teams and nothing else? It has to be more than other teams, no? And our special teams still suck.

ST might improve with the two new guys, but we won't know until Thursday night.

But that's an ass backwards priority to have. You don't go through an entire offseason, see your ST suck in some exhibitions and then panic making trades and waiver claims to shore it up. It means we seriously misevaluated (again) who we had on the units all offseason. Nothing new, really. I honestly think they lost guys like Albright and freaked out...since he is such a "glue guy".

Broaddus: Rosario Move More About Faith In Andre Smith

Posted 17 minutes ago

Bryan Broaddus Football Analyst/Scout

IRVING, Texas – When the front office decided to keep five tight ends on the active roster, I had a feeling there was potentially a different plan in place, and Monday morning we learned what that plan was.

Dante Rosario was traded to the Chicago Bears for a conditional seventh round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft. Rosario was a player that my sources around the league were telling me was being shopped, along with Sean Lissemore and Kevin Kowalski. Lissemore was moved to San Diego on Sunday and Kowalski onto the street.

Rosario was brought in to be a jack-of-all-trades type of a player, a stunt man that did those dirty jobs that no one else wanted to do. He had a special teams history with Rich Bisaccia from the Chargers and that alone made me believe that he had a real shot to stay on this roster, but his play in the preseason was less than spectacular.

This move is more about the type of training camp that Andre Smith was having. Smith was projected more as a blocker that was too slow and clumsy to be any type of a threat in this “12” personnel package, but he proved he was far from that type of tag. He was able to get down the field and become a reliable target.

There were several practices in Oxnard and in the Cincinnati game where we observed soft hands and nimble moves on routes. His ability to sustain and stay square on blocks at the point was noticeable as well. He gives them some power at the point of attack that the other tight ends don’t provide.

After the roster reduction on Saturday, I spoke with several teams that were disappointed that Smith was not on the street to be claimed. The overall belief was he was much better than just some ordinary tight end that you get for camp. He had some qualities of the type of player that you could play down after down and not struggle at the position. I like what they were able to do in moving Rosario, which was something they worked hard on, but to keep Andre Smith was a real bonus in my book.
---------------

Maybe I missed Smith being some sort of crunching blocker in the exhibitions. Yeah, he wasn't as bad as Escoflop, but someone would have to try real hard to be that inept.

I do not get Frampton being here at all. Especially now that we traded for a special teamer and picked up another on the waiver wire.

I'd get rid of him and bring back Sterling Moore.

Moore isn't here because he wasn't effective on ST.

I would guess he's done here, unfortunately and we look to dig up another CB who played well on special teams during the preseason. We might sign one off the street or raid a PS. Yes, we are that serious about ST.

Getting a little ahead of yourself booze. Either you're really anxious for the season to start or you were thinking about last year's first game against the Giants which was actually on a Wednesday night.

Yeah, I had an acid flashback to last year.

Hey, that reminds me...remember how we were all homering out after that game? Good times.

Our best game all last season. We ran, we passed, we controlled TOP, we held their receivers in check, we stopped their run game, Ware had 2 sacks, Romo played well, Eli was just decent, etc. Good times, indeed .

I knew we were doomed when Ogletree went on the talk show circuit after his big game.
