Colts fire Ryan Grigson

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 21, 2017, 3:12 PM EST

After five seasons and little progress, Ryan Grigson is out as the General Manager of the Colts.

Indianapolis owner Jim Irsay fired Grigson today, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The Colts have announced that Irsay will speak to the media later this afternoon, but they have not confirmed that Grigson is out.

It has been widely reported that Irsay would love to change the structure of his front office and work out a deal to put Peyton Manning in charge. It is unclear if firing Grigson is a step toward hiring Manning, or whether Irsay just decided to can Grigson and start searching for a new G.M. now.

It is also unclear whether head coach Chuck Pagano’s job is safe.

The Colts will now get a very late start on the offseason, as most teams have their front office personnel in place and are already making preparations for free agency and the draft. But Grigson had ample opportunity to build a team around Andrew Luck in Indianapolis, and he failed to do so. As a result, he’s out.

---------

Irsay should have fired him last offseason. The guy was terrible at team building. He's wasted one of the better young QBs in the game for several years.

Report: Chip Kelly could replace Kyle Shanahan in Atlanta

Posted by Josh Alper on January 22, 2017, 2:23 PM EST

Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is slated for a second interview with the 49ers about their head coaching job this week and the expectation around the league is that he will wind up taking the job.

That would leave the Falcons in need of a new offensive coordinator and Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reported on Sunday that the team has lined up three candidates to take the job, including the man Shanahan would be replacing with the 49ers. Glazer reports that Chip Kelly is one of the potential additions to Dan Quinn’s staff.

Glazer reported that Kelly would consider a coordinator position shortly after he was fired by the 49ers and he interviewed with the Jaguars earlier this month before Jacksonville decided to keep Nathaniel Hackett as the offensive coordinator on a permanent basis. He also reportedly met with Patriots coach Bill Belichick recently, although there’s been no word about whether there was a discussion about joining the staff.

Shanahan is eligible to speak to the 49ers this week whether the Falcons win or lose, but would only be moving on to the 49ers immediately if the Packers are moving on to the Super Bowl.

I know the Texans like Vrabel a lot. The Chronicle says Crennel's new title is assistant head coach. I don't think I can remember anyone just being an assistant head coach before.
They're probably going to have him mentor Vrabel as Crennel gets old. His health can't be too good either being that massively overweight. Seems like a smart plan. Really wish we had Houston's coaching staff :budd

Very interesting, but I'm not sure if you take the risk if you are the Falcons. They already have an elite team. Why potentially mess it up with a wildcard like Kelly? I think they'd be better off giving someone like Norv Turner a call.

I think they are looking for an innovative spread type guy rather than someone like Turner. They have a very explosive O if things are designed right. Brad Childress might be another one they look at.

Kyle Shanahan says he won’t be hiring his dad
Posted by Mike Florio on January 31, 2017, 7:32 AM EST

Incoming 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan had the leverage to try to get his dad a job with the team. Kyle apparently won’t be doing it.

“We did our deal in Washington and I wouldn’t take that back for the world, but that was pretty much the end of it,” Shanahan said Monday, via Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

That may be the case. It also may be the case that Kyle tried to parlay his status as the stand-alone cheese into a job for Mike, and the 49ers balked.

As PFT reported in December, the 49ers will not be hiring Mike Shanahan. That report emerged in response to a claim that Mike Shanahan possibly would be brought in to claim some of the power wielded by CEO Jed York. So there’s no way the 49ers could hire Mike Shanahan without creating the impression that York has been undermined and/or marginalized.

It’s possible that Kyle Shanahan tried to get his dad a job and the the 49ers said no. Given the ability of the previously leak-ridden team to suddenly keep things quiet about the courtship of new G.M. John Lynch, it’s impossible at this point to rule out anything.

I think I read somewhere today that the 49ers are going to be hiring John Lynch as their next GM.

I see that The Texans hired Wes Welker as an assistant. The chances of them making the SB just went up by 100x.

The Falcons defense played as well as they could've hoped for the vast majority of that game, and their pass rush was getting to Brady consistently. Their offense was on the field for a historically low amount of snaps and the defense was hung out to dry, forced to play 90+ snaps.

Is it the defense's fault that Freeman couldn't pick up a blitz, and then Ryan fumbled giving the Pats the ball around the Falcons 35 in the 4th quarter?

Is it the defense's fault that their dickhead coach/OC pissed away 3 points that would've iced the game with less than 4 minutes left?

This is nothing but a reactionary move, probably because the owner wants a pound of flesh.

I said it the night of the game, this type of loss will haunt them for a while and I don't think they'll make the playoffs coming off that type of loss and with all this turnover on the coaching staff. It may take them until 2018 before they bounce back.

It was not the defense's fault that I can tell, but you knew a scapegoat firing was coming. He was just the lowest hanging fruit.

Falcons may promote Marquand Manuel to defensive coordinator
Posted by Michael David Smith on February 8, 2017, 8:43 AM EST

The report that Richard Smith will not return as the Falcons’ defensive coordinator has been followed by a report that the Falcons may promote an assistant to the top job.

Falcons defensive backs coach Marquand Manuel is being strongly considered for a promotion to defensive coordinator, ESPN reports.

Manuel has been on the Falcons’ staff for two years, and he previously worked with Falcons head coach Dan Quinn for two years on the Seahawks’ defensive staff. Manuel spent eight years as an NFL defensive back. Last offseason Manuel was in the news because he asked draft prospect Eli Apple an inappropriate question about his sexual orientation.

“It was wrong and I apologize to Eli Apple, Mr. Blank, the entire Falcons organization, my family, and our Falcon fans for my insensitivity,” Manuel said after that incident came to light.

The 37-year-old Manuel is one of four current Falcons assistants believed to be in-house candidates for the defensive coordinator job. The others are defensive pass game coordinator Jerome Henderson, linebackers coach Jeff Ulbrich and receivers coach Raheem Morris, who is currently on the offensive staff but has a defensive background. There’s also been talk that one or more of the Falcons’ defensive assistants could follow Kyle Shanahan to San Francisco.

Any time you ask a defense to play 90+ snaps in a game they are going to collapse in the 4th quarter

Supposedly Quinn took control of their D late in the season and they showed improvement. That's the word anyways.
