Ross is tempting because of his speed, but I question if we would even use him even if he were available.

That is what worries me about practically any WR we would look at.

We all know we need speed. Would there ever be plays to maximize it.

Just like the D, there are issues with schematic design on offense as well and how it limits what we look at.
Sure we would. The real problem is we don't have a ton of balls to go around. When you are a running team like we are and you have to get in line behimd Witten, Dez and Beasley, the ballls the next guy sees will be limited. Still as Dak matures naturally we will throw the ball a little more. I'd like to see a WR who can sort of pick up the slack as Dez gets older and can grow with Dak. That could be a WR in the first round or it could be a fourth round WR. It's why I bring back Williams so we don't have to force the issue.

But we aren't a "running team".

We go empty on 3rd and 1.

Compared to the rest of the NFL we still are.
Doesn't mean shit if the HC and the OC don't. They can fear the hell out of our run game and it doesn't matter.

We will start march out an empty set on 3rd and less than 3.

We are a running team. Anyone who says otherwise has a ridiculous agenda.

Tell me who calls the plays for Dallas. Is it Linehan? That's my understanding.

That's my question as well. I think part of the reason why we don't currently use it is because Dak likely doesn't trust Butler or Williams deep.. I mean how could he given their chances?

I'm not going to claim a lot about him but his highlights seemed to point towards him being a body catcher which I'd like to avoid.

He's not really a body catcher.

He's probably never going to be an elite, number one WR due to his size, but if you're fine with taking an elite deep threat/number 2 WR at the end of the 1st, then he's your guy.

I'd rather go with a similarly rated DE like McKinley, Charlton or Lawson, but if all the top options on the DL are gone and he's left, I wouldn't complain about the pick.

I'd take a young DeSean Jackson who isn't a prick in the first round in a heart beat. Defenses would be screwed because bringing a safety up means single coverage for a guy who can run past any corner. And if the corner cheats deep the comeback routes and slants will be cake. We just don't have a guy like that right now.

But yes, ultimately this is an extremely deep pass rusher class. Means someone with a lot of talent should be left by the time our pick rolls around and we should get a talented DE. I doubt Ross makes it to our pick anyway.

This would be my rough outline of positional targeting.

1) Stud defender. Any position. Though by definition this tends to exclude a corner, especially at 28. You aren't getting the Darrelle Revises at 28.

2) Defense again but this time either DL or DB potentially if you didn't go DB in round 1. No issues if this is a second defensive lineman though.

3) Athletic tight end or developmental offensive lineman. Sorry, I know no one wants to hear that but get ready. At least not in the second round.

4) Speed WR or backup QB prospect.

Later rounds obviously just whatever looks like you are getting a guy who can be a future starter.

I think this sounds like a pretty good plan. Our focus should be on improving the defense as quickly as possible without impairing the offense. I'd like to say just draft defense alone, but something has to be done soon at TE and RT whether we like it (replacing Free) or not (replacing Witten).
