Jerry Jones optimistic about Leary's return for opener but feels team is snake bit at guard

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is disappointed that guard Ron Leary will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday, causing him to miss the next two-to-four weeks.

Jones considers Leary at starter at left guard and his hopeful he will return in time for the season opener against the Giants Sept. 8.

Still Jones said Leary, a second-year player and former undrafted free agent, needed the work _ as does the entire offensive line.

"I hate that he’s not getting the work," Jones said. "I am relieved it’s not any more serious than it is."

Jones admits being frustrated and snake bit because of all the injuries at the same position.

Nate Livings, who started last year at left guard, missed the early part of camp with a cut on his foot before having to undergo knee surgery that has him out for bulk of the preseason. Right guard Mackenzy Bernadeau was out early with a hamstring injury. Leary had a foot injury that kept him out the first two weeks of camp and now needs surgery.

Backup guards Kevin Kowalski (knee), Ryan Cook (back) and Ray Dominguez (shoulder) still are out.

"Well it does (have me feeling snakebit). What do we have 18 offensive lineman on the roster?" Jones said. "When we thought we had as much and more as we needed. As we are seeing it doesn’t mean a lot of those are down the line guys well it doesn’t mean those are up front guys are not out too. You are dealing with that in training camp. But we are getting injury and compromised at a spot we didn't need to get compromised."

No Jerry, this is not "snakebit".

This is what happens because you fricking signed that contract with Satan so you could hoist the Lombardi with Barry Switzer as a coach.

It's also what happens when you sign two bums and don't draft anyone worth a damn for years on end.

You end up with a revolving door at the position desperately scrambling for a solution; you have so many "maybes" that you end up with a laundry list of guys that you've tried.

You don't get this because you're still a football retard after 24 years.

I can almost excuse the bad drafting. It does happen.

But the signing of these two idiots...Livings and Bernadeau...my God it was so easy to see it being a horrific pair when we could have taken that money on both and signed Ben Grubbs.

I mean right now...maybe one of them starts a year after signing a healthy deal? Maybe? Hell, Bernadeau would be among the league's highest paid guard backups if Moore were here right now.

I guess it was a result of thinking we could find another Kyle Kosier or something.

Bullshit. It doesn't happen because teams don't typically keep fuck ups on the payroll for that long.

And then drafted DeCastro like any rational GM would do.

A lot of teams have OL issues. Not to our chronic degree, but there are a select number of teams who not only value the OL, but know how to draft for it.

I'd say it is one of the toughest positions to evaluate in any draft once you get past the top prospects.

You have to value it as the lifeblood of the offense. Right behind QB. There is no reason to waste time with WRs and RBs.

It means you have to have someone on your staff, coach or scout, who has an eye for it and you work at it. Really work at it. It is clear to me, we don't.

It looks like Jerry goes to the OL coach at the time, whichever guy it is, and says "who do you lak?"

And then drafted DeCastro like any rational GM would do.
There is always the overkill aspect.

If you sign a top flight proven OG, then it is excusable to move on in the draft.

You can win with an average guard. You cannot win with two inadequate ones.

Jerry is optimistic about something? I'm shocked.
I prefer the newer more shiny "not worried" response to anything, literally anything, that could be viewed as adverse.

We have two Chip Dillers running this franchise.

Ayuh. Especially Livings. I can kind of excuse Bernadeau a little because he was cheaper and at least had not yet proven that he was a total turd. It was definitely an effort to try and replicate the Kosier signing though.

The Livings signing was bad and it was clear at the time that it wasn't going to end well. He sucks and to bring in a turd like that and a "he might turn into a serviceable guard like Kosier" player like Bernadeau and think "OK, OL is fixed!"...yeah, that's why this team wallows in mediocrity year after year.
