Report: Pats TE questioned in probe

New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was questioned by police investigating a possible homicide in North Attleboro, Mass., Sports Illustrated reported on Tuesday.

A 27-year-old man was found dead less than a mile from Hernandez’s home on Monday, according to multiple reports.

Hernandez spoke with Massachusetts state police Monday, according to the SI report. SI NFL writer Greg Bedard said on Twitter that the police have entered Hernandez's home and included a photo of two officers approaching Hernandez's front door.

Hernandez has been "uncooperative" with police, ABC News reported.

The SI report says Hernandez “is not believed to be a murder suspect,” but a car rented in his name could be of interest to investigators.

The Attleboro Sun Chronicle claims that police are interested in searching and analyzing the car for fingerprints.

Hmmm.

Gronk had back surgery today too.

I would offer them Pablo Escobar for a second right now.

Between this knucklehead and Gronk'd multiple surgeries, Tebow might be a fantasy steal.

Police spend “hours” inside Hernandez home, emerge with box

Posted by Mike Florio on June 19, 2013, 8:05 AM EDT

With offseason workouts completed for most teams, the calendar has reached the point at which players have free time — and coaches and General Managers spend most of their free time worrying about getting a phone call regarding a player who has found trouble.

At some point in the past day or so, Patriots coach Bill Belichick received one of those calls. But instead of hearing about the latest run-of-the-mill off-field entanglement, Belichick was told that tight end Aaron Hernandez faces police questioning after a body of an “associate” was found in the vicinity of a rental car connected to Hernandez.

All reports continue to indicate that Hernandez is not a suspect. Still, Hernandez has consulted with a lawyer, per SI.com. According to ABC, Hernandez received at his North Attleboro home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. a hand-delivered package from the “prominent law firm Ropes and Gray,” an international corporate firm with 11 offices worldwide.

Police reportedly spent hours inside Hernandez’s residence on Tuesday, ultimately searching the structure and emerging with a box.

Two men who tried to leave during the search reportedly were detained. The car in which they planned to leave also was searched.

Hernandez’s agents have declined comment. The Patriots issued the standard perfunctory comment, acknowledging the reports but declining to address the situation in deference to the investigation.

It’s unclear whether and to what extent Hernandez has been questioned by police. ABC has reported that he was initially uncooperative, which implies that at some point he has decided to cooperate. (The Boston Herald disputes the ABC report, using the dismissive “Web reports” label.)

Many possible explanations exist. It seems implausible that Hernandez had any role in the killing of the “associate,” given the presence of the rental car tied to Hernandez in the vicinity of the body. At a minimum, the car would have been removed.

Also, there was no apparent effort to conceal the body, which was found by a jogger in an industrial park roughly a mile from Hernandez’s home on Monday.

The family of homicide victim Odin Lloyd tells WBZ-TV that Lloyd dated the sister of Aaron Hernandez's girlfriend.

The pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together. Lloyd's body was found roughly a mile from Hernandez's home, in the vicinity of a rental car connected to the tight end. WBZ-TV is reporting that Hernandez is not cooperating with police and has not been ruled out as a suspect. He left his house in a white SUV Wednesday morning, presumably with his lawyers

Curran breaks down the Hernandez “associate” murder investigation

Posted by Mike Florio on June 19, 2013, 7:01 PM EDT

It’s been a day since the latest now-I’ve-seen-everything story emerged in the NFL, and there’s still not much clarity regarding the investigation involving the death of an “associate” of Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez.

But as Tom Curran of CSN New England explained on Wednesday’s edition of Pro Football Talk on NBCSN, the process could still lead to an unfavorable outcome for Hernandez.

“[T]here’s so much to plow through and I think right now we’re at the table-setting stage,” Curran said. “There’s a sense that law enforcement is getting all its ducks in a row and then they’ll spill them on the table to put a case together.”

The Patriots remain tight lipped, both publicly and privately.

“Not a word,” Curran said regarding the team. “This is a period of time that the NFL kind of shuts down. I’m not sure even if [coach] Bill Belichick is in the country right now. I know he had a European vacation planned; he may be out of the country. Given the circumstances and the way this could conceivably go, because it’s not pretty, he might be in a situation where he might have to come back. I think that this is a serious situation that bears a lot of close watching over the next couple of days.”

The process, as Curran separately explained in writing, will entail a sweeping examination of all available and relevant evidence.

From the CSI-style stuff that modern juries now expect to see to electronic information harvested from cell phones and computers to surveillance systems that may have been in place at the industrial park where the body was found or at Hernandez’s home, plenty of potential proof is floating around. Curran says that investigators will instruct cellular providers to freeze any information in place, in the event that any of the witnesses try to destroy his or her phone.

And any attempt by any of the witnesses to erase or eliminate electronic evidence won’t look good when the time comes to determine whether folks are guilty of any crimes.

At this point, it’s unclear how many crimes were or may have been committed, beyond the most obvious one: Murder. In the coming days and weeks, more information will likely surface. For now, it’s still possible that things will go poorly for Hernandez.

Suit against Hernandez being re-filed today

Posted by Mike Florio on June 19, 2013, 3:51 PM EDT

The lawsuit filed last week against Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez for allegedly shooting a guy in the face was indeed dismissed. But it will be re-filed. Today.

Attorney David Jaroslawicz, who represented the former Jets massage therapists in the lawsuit against Brett Favre, tells PFT that the case was dismissed not because of a settlement but because of a mistake in the paperwork.

“It is being refiled today,” Jaroslawicz said via email. “The injury was corrected. He did not have plates and screws in his arm, only in the right side of his face.”

Typically, a complaint can be amended freely and without court permission before the defendant submits a response. It’s unclear why that didn’t happen here, especially since re-filing the lawsuit means cutting a new check for the filing fee.

Report: Evidence puts Hernandez with dead “associate” on evening of murder

Posted by Mike Florio on June 19, 2013, 11:05 PM EDT

Earlier today, Tom Curran of CSN New England gave an ominous assessment of the manner in which the investigation regarding a death of Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez’s “associate” could unfold.

It’s apparently unfolding.

The victim has officially been identified as 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, and his death has been ruled a homicide. According to FOX 25 in Boston, police have determined that four men — including Hernandez and Odin Lloyd — were in a vehicle together after leaving a bar, and that only three of the men returned to Hernandez’s home.

Per the report, and supplemented by tweets from Ted Daniel of FOX 25, forensic evidence collected by police places a vehicle “driven by” Hernandez at the “crime scene.” It’s unclear whether the crime scene was the location where Lloyd’s body was found, or whether the crime (i.e., the site of Lloyd’s murder) occurred elsewhere.

FOX 25 also reports that Lloyd sent a text to a friend referring to Hernandez.

Our mildly-educated guess is that more evidence of text messages and other electronically-created footprints will be used to further piece together the puzzle.

Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez is now considered likely to be arrested in the investigation of the death of a man described as his associate, according to a Sports Illustrated report.
It is not clear what the charge against Hernandez is expected to be, but the Sports Illustrated report says that law enforcement authorities believe Hernandez’s involvement in the death of Odin Lloyd is significant enough that an arrest is likely.
Shortly after the Sports Illustrated report was published, Boston Globe reporter Wesley Lowery wrote on Twitter that no arrest is imminent. Lowery added, however, that that does not mean Hernandez won’t be arrested.
Massachusetts State Police searched Hernandez’s home on Wednesday, and a car that was rented under Hernandez’s name has been referred to as a key piece of evidence into the death of Lloyd.
In a separate matter, Hernandez has been sued by a man who says Hernandez shot him in the face. And Sports Illustrated reports that Hernandez has been connected to two other incidents involving guns and police, although he was not charged in either of those incidents.

New England Patriots star 'partied with murder victim hours before he was killed and then destroyed surveillance video from his home and hired a cleaning crew'

A New England Patriots star partied at a Boston bar with a man who was found murdered just hours later, it was claimed today.

Aaron Hernandez then reportedly destroyed surveillance video taken from his $1.3million home and then a cleaning crew to scrub the home on the same day that Odin Lloyd was found dead.

According to Fox 25, Hernandez left the bar with Lloyd and two friends in a rented SUV on Sunday night, but only three men returned to Hernandez's mansion in North Attleborough, Massachusetts.

Fox 25 reports that a police source said the 23-year-old tight end is 'tied directly' to the execution-style murder.

Police have filed no charges and have not named Hernandez - or anyone else - a suspect in the case.

On Tuesday night, officers searched Hernandez's home for three hours. The star player had been cooperating with police, but has since hired a lawyer and stopped talking, according to Fox 25.

ABC News reports that Massachusetts State Police are planning to return to Hernandez's house for a longer, more extensive search today becausethey believe he may have tampered with evidence.

A police source told the network that Hernandez's security system was smashed - including the surveillance videos. He also handed over his cell phone to investigators 'in pieces.'

On Monday, before Lloyd's body was found, he also hired a cleaning crew to scrub the mansion, the police source said.

His attorneys and his agent have declined to comment on the case.

Mr Lloyd, 27, a Boston Bandits players, was found shot dead in an industrial park less than a mile away from Hernandez's home on Monday evening.
He was reportedly dating the sister of Hernandez's girlfriend.

Odin Lloyd's uncle said he had last seen his nephew on Sunday and described as a 'good guy' who lived in Dorchester and loved football.

Since 2007, Lloyd had been a linebacker for the Bandits semi-pro football team, Olivier Bustin, the team’s head coach told Boston.com.

He said Lloyd, a speedy pass rushing specialist listed at 5-foot-11 and 215 pounds, learned to play football at the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science, in Roxbury.

'We had our first scrimmage on Saturday night,' he told the Boston Globe. 'He participated. He played well. Was in good spirits. He was helping mentor a younger player.'

The scrimmage finished around 9:30pm and that was the last Bustin heard from Lloyd, he said.

'He was a very personable player,' he said. 'Every person on our team got along with him. I can’t remember any player having any beef with him.'

He might want to ask Ray Lewis for his lawyer's number.

Funny you say that because that's exactly the situation that I thought of.

He may not have killed anyone, but I do think he at least pulled a Ray Lewis and tried covering it up for his buddies.

The fact that the guy was dating the sister of Hernadez's girlfriend opens up all kinds of possibilities. Was the victim and his GF fighting and somehow Hernandez got involved? Shit like that...lots of people could be in trouble for this. Destrying his cell phone and getting his house cleaned the morning after is suspicious as well.

He's guilty as hell. No doubt about it. Maybe he wasn't the guy who pulled the trigger but his behavior since it went down makes it clear that he was at least involved in trying to cover it up.
