Agreed, the front office wanted a veteran option that they could turn to at some point over the next 7 games if Weeden either gets hurt or plays horrendously, it's not that hard to figure out.
I think it's Weeden's job to lose. I do not think Cassell was acquired to replace him.

But since we don't know how Weeden will do, we have plan B should he falter and be the shitty Weeden we saw in his brief stint last year. Should Weeden play well, then Cassel will only see the field in case of injury to Weeden.

Yes something could evolve but that isn't he primary plan by every indication.

That's the thing, they weren't going to put all their eggs in Weeden's basket, nor should they have. Obviously they liked Cassel better than the ne'erdowells on the street.

Potential franchise QB.

This is what you said.

He was not even automatically named the starter over Tavaris Jackson does that scream franchise QB to you?

But anyway you got me it's hard to go against anything posted 3rd person in Wiki.
So, you're arguing the difference between "future" and "potential"?

Not so sure, doesn't Cassel also come in to compete with Weeden?
Competing in TC is completely different than coming in mid-season and challenging a guy that has been on the roster for 2 years and knows the system.

Knows the system and knows the players around him and what they will do and where they will be at. There is a reason why you'll hear Weeden talk about how nice it was to be in the same system for two years in a row. You might be able to pick up the basics of an offense in a couple of weeks but to truly be comfortable in the system and get any sort of chemistry with the players around you it takes way longer then that. Maybe Cassel will adjust really quickly but he would be a rare breed to be able to do that.

Brandon Weeden knows why Cowboys picked up Matt Cassel

Todd Archer, ESPN Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas – Matt Cassel did not arrive inside the locker room until after the Dallas Cowboys finished practice Wednesday, but he is in the midst of a crash course on their offense.

The Cowboys acquired Cassel in a trade from the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday and will attempt to get him up to speed with their offense as quick as possible.

But he is not here to press Brandon Weeden as the starter. Earlier in the day Jason Garrett said the pickup was more about insurance in case Weeden falters or is injured.

Garrett called Weeden on Tuesday night after the trade became official.

“He was very upfront and said, ‘This is your deal. Take it and run with it. We are behind you 1000 percent,’" Weeden said. “That’s what he said. It was comforting coming from him. He didn’t have to call me. But that’s the way I was going to approach it.”

Weeden, who lost his only start in place of an injured Tony Romo last year, feels more comfortable with the Cowboys offense. It’s the first time since junior high he has had the same scheme and same coordinator in back to back years.

He’s not about to look over his shoulder with Cassel on the team.

“It’s the nature of this business,” Weeden said. “The quarterback position is so important, you’ve got to have guys in place if something were to happen. I’m not worried about it. I’ve met Matt once. Super nice guy. Great guy. Great guy to be around. I’m excited about that. He’s been around this league a long time. He’s been around [Tom] Brady, he’s been around some good quarterbacks. I’m sure he will have a lot of positive information for us. He’s a pro. He’s been doing this thing a long time, so I’m excited to have him. I’m not putting any extra pressure on myself. I’ve got to go out and play well. If I do that, everything will take care of itself.”

Weeden is the starter now, but he’ll have to compete with Cassel

Posted by Michael David Smith on September 23, 2015, 5:08 PM EDT

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett says Brandon Weeden is the starting for now, but new arrival Matt Cassel will have the opportunity to compete for the starting job.

“Brandon is going to be our starting quarterback this week,” Garrett said.

But what about the other eight weeks or so that Tony Romo will miss? When Garrett was asked if Weeden is looking over his shoulder at Cassel, Garrett acknowledged that he’ll have to compete with Cassel for the starting job going forward.

“I was very direct with him. Every player on this team is competing each and every day for their spot on the team, for their role on the team. That’s starters, that’s backup guys, that’s everybody. He knows that, everybody knows that. Having said that, 100 percent support behind Brandon as our starting quarterback. We’re always trying to make our team better, 365 days a year we’re looking at who’s available to help us make our team better, and we just feel like in this particular case, with Tony being out, it was important for us to get a veteran quarterback here, and having the opportunity to get Matt Cassel, I’m excited to bring him to our football team,” Garrett said.

Weeden said he’s excited to play with Cassel, but acknowledged that he has to perform if he wants to remain the starter.

“I’ve got to go out and play well. If I do that, everything will take care of itself,” Weeden said. “It’s my job to go out and execute and take advantage of this opportunity.”

So while Garrett is promising “100 percent support” for Weeden, that support only extends so far. If Weeden stinks, Garrett is ready to hand the reins over to Cassel just as soon as Cassel knows the playbook. That’s life for a backup quarterback in the NFL.

Seems like this is the QB Garrett wanted...so that is a good thing. Also, sounds like it will be an open competition too...which is good. All the QBs rumored here were roundly pooped on. It is a no-brainer to get the QB the coach wants IMO...particularly at such a low cost.

Yeah, like I said yesterday if they brought him in as a potential replacement for Weeden I have no issues with the trade at all.

Cowboys have to give themselves the best chance to win and unfortunately this guy's the best available.

They need their next Steve Beuerlein. Assuming Romo will be back and effective at all this year is irresponsible. Yeah he should "only" miss about 8-10 weeks, but after that how healthy will that collar bone really be? Dude's 35. Can he take being driven into the ground on it all over again?

Every injury Romo gets makes him more fragile, and the team needs as much proven insurance as they can find.

The change of font mid-post automatically makes this the POTD.

Fun fact:

Over the past three seasons (2013-2015), despite starting only nine games, Matt Cassel has three games in which he has attempted at least 25 passes and posted a passer rating of 113.7 or higher. Sam Bradford has one ... in his entire career (51 starts).
