So my question is, if Appel is at worst the 2nd best player in this draft and he can no longer leverage going back to school than why isn't he the hands down pick?
I think Appel and Gray would cost more, so it seems like the Astros, if they pick Moran, are trying to be able to give their later picks more money.

I get that, but Appel lost all his leverage. He's not going to not sign and sit out a year so he can be had for less than he wants.

Last year the savings from taking Correa were used to get some higher level talent later. I don't know if that's going to be a long term draft strategy or it was just one instance, but we'll see.

I hope someone gets pushed down to 11 because they don't want to give a big contract to their 1st pick.

The farm system is coming around. AA is where the bulk of the talent is right now. There are a good amount of players who project to be very good, but we are missing guys with elite upside. I'm kind of hoping for Appel for this reason, but in Luhnow I trust.

I think fans of other teams don't quite appreciate the degree to which Houston's farm system was burned to the ground and salted over while the previous front office always chasing that last playoff appearance. They've needed to go for depth so far, but I feel like now's the time to grab the elite guy.

I don't know what its like to have a thin farm system, but I do know what it's like to pass on talent to save money and that pisses me off. Sometimes it works out and sometimes you end up with Tim Beckham over Buster Posey.

I am a little disappointed with the Alderson regime...I thought he would do more with the system. Yeah...he got Wheeler, D'Arnaud, and Syndergaard, but the drafts they have had have not been super great. I expected more from him.

From the shot you posted it appears you are all set for a pitcher.

Cubs see a stud pitching staring at them and they take a 3B who might move to the OF.

As an aside, props to the Astros for getting the best player despite his contract.

Kind of surprised Houston took Appel. Sounded like they would go a different direction because of the money/Boras. Thought for sure the Cubs would take Jonathan Gray but they took power hitting stud Kris Bryant from San Diego (3B/1B/OF). I was hoping for pitching but everyone says this guy is about as safe a pick as it gets and that he's the top bat in the draft. Hard to be disappointed in that.

Meh. I was hoping for the arm. I wonder if they would have taken Appel had he been there.

If he pans out the way it's expected Bryant is going to rake and hit a ton of HRs no matter where they're playing him. And the Cubs can sign a free agent pitcher or two because they have, you know, an actual MLB budget. And fans. Who come to the ballpark.
