So if we go in with a Williams/Randle/McFadden/4th rounder in our stable, will we really be in that bad shape? Even if we had resigned Murray for a reasonable contract we would have had to distribute the run. If we can average 4.2ish yards by committee and have a collective 400 rushes in 2015 I don't think we're in worse condition than last year. In fact a committee would probably help prevent us from stalling once the starting RB gets winded. I remember a dozen times where Murray would go off the field after a good run and we'd proceed to piss away the drive.

I was just thinking about the same thing. Hardly any teams have a featured runner any more. Instead of investing $8m a year to one rb, behind this line we should be able to get good production out of a collection of average backs. As a bonus we don't have all our eggs in one basket when one gets hurt.

Yeah teams like Cincinnati got almost equivalent production from a committee. Murray's production can definitely be replaced considering how much he seemed to lose steam towards the end of the season. We just need to run the ball as many times as we did in 2014.

We will stop deluding ourselves NOW. Seriously, and no offense intended.

Murray led the league in 20 yard plays last season. He repeatedly bailed the entire offense (and thus the whole team).

Dallas needs a special back. We can give him fewer carries, fine, but imagining D-Mac, Randle, and Williams can be what Murray was last year is delusional.

Can they average 4.7 yards per carry as a group? I don't know probably not. I think Randle would average 4.7 yards per carry or more with more carries. I think Williams could be in that same range as well. I have my doubt that McFadden would but I think McFadden's average could be close to 4.

So lets say the Cowboys stay consistent with the carries but as a group these guys only average 4.2-4.4 yards per carry. That literally means as a group with the same carries as Murray we would get 1724 yards instead of the 1845 that Murray got. Is that really the end of the world? So no I don't think it's that delusional that we can close to replacing Murray's production with multiple backs. McFadden should be able to catch similar to Murray.

What you sacrifice in rhythm by having only 1 RB getting all of the carries you make up for with fresh legs. I'd love to draft a guy still in this draft obviously but I don't think it has to be Gordon or Gurley for our team to have a great running game next year. By the way, does it concern anyone that Gurley missed 3 games in 2013 and tore his knee up in 2014. The only healthy season he has really had was in 2012 when he was a part time player.

He had a similar history to Murray injury wise, I am not so sold on Gurley he reminds me a little of Richardson, but he is more elusive, I just don't see what he does working as well in the Pros.

The scenaro you purpose would almost dictate that every RB for Dallas would have to average 4 yards a carry because there will probably be about 110 yards average per game wbich means about 25 attempts. It doesn't sound like much but most teams, do not accumulate 1800 or so yards in a 16 game season.

So to maintain the past seasons production it will take a pretty good group to accomplish this.

Last year 14 NFL teams rushed for more then 1800 yards.

I disagree. Having a bellcow plus a top QB gave us a huge advantage last season. RB by committee doesn't give us the same advantage. Defenses won't consistently stack the box against a committee because they don't fear any particular runner in the committee. Which means things won't be as open in the passing game.

It worked for New England last year. All your committee needs is 3.5 - 4 yards per play until a team HAS to give some respect to defending the run.

Then our O-line will demolish teams and we can just run the ball down people's throats with ease. That's the whole point. If teams don't respect the running game with our O-line and these RBs are banging out 4.5 yards per carry on a consistent basis in a game then you don't need to throw the ball.

I disagree. Defenses worry when you can threaten to run for 10 or more yards. They aren't going to worry a whole lot about 4 yards a carry from a committee of mediocrity.

And yet 14 teams didn't have the success we had by having one dominant guy, so there's that.
Well that's because as a team we actually ran for 2300 yards thanks to Randle chipping in with some excellent runs. The Cowboys actually wouldn't be splitting up 392 carries between 3 backs. We actually ran the ball 508 total times last year (Including QBs and WRs).

Also those 14 teams didn't have Romo and Dez Bryant moving the chains. Kind of makes a big difference.

I agree that if you have Brady you can get away with a lot more.

Why not? If you can get 4 yards a carry you don't even have to pass the ball. Considering all of Randle's long runs last year, are we really going to pretend like we don't have a back who can threaten to get 10 yards?
