New deals will require creativity

IRVING, Texas -- Jerry Jones said Thursday he would like to sign receiver Dez Bryant and running back DeMarco Murray, the NFL's leading rusher, but getting long-term deals done with each will require creativity and compromise.

It's not that the Cowboys don't have the cap room to sign both, it's that they don't want to be as snug against the NFL-mandated salary cap as they've been the past few seasons.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says signing DeMarco Murray and Dez Bryant to new long-term deals will be a challenge.

"It's going to be a challenge," Jones said. "Is it financially reasonable? No. Is it possible? Yes.

"But if you just looked at it from dollars and cents, it probably doesn't look reasonable. You have to figure out how you get there, but at the end of the day you realize it's going to be costly to have both of those players."

For now, Bryant seems to be the higher priority. He led the NFL with 16 touchdowns and had more than 1,200 yards receiving for the second consecutive season.

If the Cowboys can't reach a long-term agreement with Bryant, Jones has said they will use the franchise tag on him, which will pay Bryant about $12.5 million in 2015.

Murray's deal is trickier because he carried the ball a league-leading 392 times. History says running backs who carry the ball that much decline quickly. Jones doesn't want to get stuck with a declining player who has a huge salary.

The Cowboys have the money to sign each player, but Jones said the organization wants to spend prudently.

Jones said he's not interested in restructuring a contract like Tony Romo's deal, which will count nearly $27 million for a luxury item -- he'd only do that for a player he thinks would put the Cowboys into the Super Bowl.

"In general, loading up on one player in an area that just requires good, solid consistency," Jones said, "might not be the way to go."

Jones also hinted that cornerback Brandon Carr, whose cap figure will be nearly $13 million, might be asked to take a pay cut.

"Carr played well the last month. I'm not as critical of him as some others, but that's a lot of money," Jones said. "One thing we've got to do in every way we can is get the value for the money."

Jerry Jones: “Probably Doesn’t Look Reasonable” To Retain Both Dez And Murray For 2015

IRVING, Texas – He didn’t make any sweeping declarations, but Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones admitted Thursday what has seemed obvious for some time. It seems unlikely both Dez Bryant and DeMarco Murray will be members of the Cowboys in 2015.

“Is it possible? Yes,” Jones said. “But if you just look at it from the standpoint of dollars and cents, it probably doesn’t look reasonable.”

The Cowboys’ duo of All-Pro weapons will be at the center of many offseason conversations as the franchise nears the free agency window. Bryant just finished his rookie contract after three-straight seasons with 1,200 or more yards and 12 or more touchdowns. In 2014, he led the NFL with 16 receiving touchdowns.

Murray just concluded a contract season that saw him win the NFL rushing title with 1,845 yards. After injuries hampered his first two seasons, he’s enjoyed back-to-back 1,000-plus yard seasons for a combined total of 2,966 yards in 2013 and 2014. He’s rushed for 22 touchdowns in the last two years.

Those stats spell out an obvious truth: both Cowboys Pro Bowlers are going to command a hefty price this spring.

“At the end of the day you do realize it’s going to be costly to have both those players,” Jones said.

Jones said Thursday that he anticipates the Cowboys will be able to spend money in free agency season, as they have needs along their defensive front and perhaps at cornerback. Compared to recent seasons, they should have more flexibility to do that.

“It just is going to depend. What is the good news is, we’re in a lot better shape under the cap than we’ve been at any time over the last two or three years,” Jones said.

The Cowboys have plenty of roster decisions to make within their own building. Behind the marquee pairing of Bryant and Murray, key players like Doug Free, Jermey Parnell, Justin Durant, Rolando McClain and Bruce Carter are all up for renewal.

“We’ve got more flexibility. And we’re going to learn from the success and the how we’ve made our decisions,” Jones said.

What that means going forward is open to interpretation. Jones did not want to get into specifics about any impending free agents. But with their coaching staff taken care of, the Cowboys can turn their attention to their roster – headlined by what to do with Bryant and Murray.

“There’s no timeframe. We could easily be visiting about that immediately with them. Because we have them under contract, we can talk to them anytime,” Jones said. “So really the order of our day, we’ve got a lot of work to do on our roster.”

We'll have to sign a vet on the cheap or draft a rookie on day 2. No way do I see Randle as our starter / every down back.

Murray makes $1,596,625 but balks at $4mil/yr.....don't know, maybe someone will break the bank for him, but while I would like to keep him at the right price I think it's a big gamble hoping he stays healthy for a full season again especially with his workload.

I suppose the first number is the players's age.

Not a good year for Murray to ask for the moon with a list like that out there.

Especially for a RB coming off 400 carries and a fumbler at that.

Who on that list would you take over Murray at a reasonable number?

At 3-4 per I'd take Moreno.

Hard to believe McFadden was in the same class as Felix Jones but is only one year older than Murray.

Moreno's abit of an injury risk now, I'd kick the tires on Ridley, he's always been a good runner just fumbles at times. So we might not miss a beat :unsure

Ingram is the most productive on that list behind Murray and 31 yr old Gore. McFadden has had injury issues for the last 4-5 years. Matthews is coming off a major injury and Moreno has had injury issues and did hardly anything in Miami this year.

That was the first name that stuck out to me.

I like McFadden but he has a history of injuries if I'm not mistaken.

I'd be interested in Ingram over probably everyone else on that list. Not sure if the Saints are going to resign him. He might get a heftier contract than most of those guys too. Ridley is also definitely a guy I would like to see them sign, assuming he would come cheaper than Ingram. His fumbling issues are a concern but probably will also help keep his price down. He would be a good back to throw into the mix with Randle and Dunbar, IMO. He can carry it 20 times if need be but is also accustom to sharing the ball.

I wonder how much Ingram would cost? I don't think the saints can resign him, thy are strapped for cash. He's a couple years younger than Murray and should have a lot of tread left, New Orleans didn't use him much. I think he would be my top choice if the price was right.
