Let Callahan go, promote Linehan officially to OC and block the move.

So basically just like Garrett?
I think the book is written on Fox though. Old dog not learning new tricks and all that. At least there's still hope for Garrett to soak stuff up as he's still a young coach by all standards.

Dennis Allen interviewing for Giants defensive coordinator on Tuesday

Posted by Josh Alper on January 13, 2015, 3:19 PM EST

The Giants are scheduled to interview their former defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo for a return to that job on Wednesday, but they’re open to coaches without experience on Tom Coughlin’s staff as well.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that former Raiders head coach Dennis Allen is interviewing for the job on Tuesday. Allen was the defensive coordinator of the Broncos for one year before being hired in Oakland, where he spent two-plus years as the head coach before getting fired four games into the 2014 season with an 8-28 record to show for his efforts.

The Giants are also expected to interview Pepper Johnson for the job and they interviewed Redskins assistant Raheem Morris, but Morris isn’t thought to be in the running for the job.

Coughlin’s search is following a similar path to the one the Giants traveled while looking for an offensive coordinator last year. A former member of Coughlin’s staff, Mike Sullivan, was up for the job that ultimately went to Ben McAdoo, who had no previous connections to the staff. Unless the Giants plan to cast a wider net, we should know soon if things have played out the same way this year.

Steve Spagnuolo to interview for his old Giants job tomorrow

Posted by Darin Gantt on January 13, 2015, 2:43 PM EST

The Giants are going to have a familiar face interviewing for their defensive coordinator job.

Via Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh told reporters that secondary coach Steve Spagnuolo had been given permission to interview with the Giants tomorrow.

Spagnuolo helped the Giants to a Super Bowl title, but after failed stints as a head coach in St. Louis and a coordinator in New Orleans, he’s had to rebuild his reputation.

Harbaugh also said he’s still operating under the impression offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak is staying, despite his name being linked to the Denver opening.

“I’m planning on Gary being back,” Harbaugh said. “I’m not anticipating that changing at this time. He’s told me he’s planning on being here. Denver hasn’t reached out in any way at this time.”

Kubiak has said he wants to stay in Baltimore, so unless he changes his mind or the Broncos come calling, they should enjoy some stability.

Browns ramping up OC interviews, including Trestman

Posted by Darin Gantt on January 13, 2015, 2:13 PM EST

After letting Kyle Shanahan walk, the Browns are in the process of finding another offensive coordinator, and they have at least two interviews this week.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns will interview former Bears head coach Marc Trestman and Raiders quarterback coach John DeFilippo this week. They’ve also asked permission to talk to Jets running backs coach Anthony Lynn.

Those three represent a wide variety of age, experience and background.

Trestman did a stint with the Browns when Bernie Kosar was the quarterback. DeFilippo’s a younger candidate who did good work with rookie Derek Carr this year. And Lynn coached the Browns running backs in 2007 and 2008 when Jamal Lewis was rushing for 1,000 yards a year.

They’re still waiting to see if they can interview Cowboys assistants Bill Callahan and Scott Linehan, while veterans Al Saunders and Chan Gailey remain in the mix.

That wide variety of candidates makes it hard to determine what track they want to take with Johnny Manziel, assuming they know.

Glazer: Fox, Elway had “irreconcilable differences”

Posted by Mike Florio on January 13, 2015, 6:14 PM EST

Broncos V.P. of football operations and G.M. John Elway addressed the “mutual parting” with coach John Fox at a press conference on Tuesday. Before that, FOX’s Jay Glazer joined PFT Live to discuss the events that led to the divorce.

“This has actually been a long time coming,” Glazer said. “We kind of knew, I figured that, all the way back to last year’s even Senior Bowl, [Scouting] Combine, this year’s situation where this is going to be one and done unless, they won a Super Bowl, I think John Elway, just everything that, you know, the talent that he was going to bring in there he wasn’t going to accept anything less. I think it was just kind of like, almost like a marriage gone bad. They were irreconcilable differences, that’s what it was.”

So how much of it is on Fox?

“It’s really hard not to get along with John Fox,” Glazer said. “It really is. And, you know, it’s no secret that Fox and I are real good friends, I told him yesterday, ‘Hey, you may be a complete knucklehead, but you’re definitely not hard to get along with.’ It just became a situation where it wasn’t just with Fox, it was John Elway with the entire staff.”

How did it happen?

“It wasn’t a hatred, it wasn’t like that,” Glazer said. “It wasn’t, I don’t know, just somewhere along the line those two guys, they were close and now all of a sudden they weren’t and I don’t really . . . it didn’t happen this year, it happened long ago and sometimes change is just good for both parts and that’s what I’m saying. . . . It’s not like this just happened this week. It’s been just a long time, you know, there some things and I think once you start going down that road, it just kind of snowballs more and more and more. And every little thing will bother you about the other person, you know what I mean, when you have a situation when it’s irreconcilable differences.”

Almost as surprising as the longstanding existence of “irreconcilable differences” was the ability of Elway and Fox to keep the issues under wraps. How did they do it?

“Because it wasn’t like a hatred,” Glazer said. “It wasn’t like, look, you didn’t have a thing like [former 49ers coach] Jim Harbaugh, who is so hard to get along with, and [49ers G.M.] Trent Baalke, they’re a clash of personalities. John Elway is a very likeable guy and he’s easy to get along with. John Fox is a very likeable guy and he’s very easy to get along with. Those two guys just together it just became a bad match. . . .

“Neither one of these guys also really — they’re not politicians, you know what I mean? It comes out a lot when guys are politicians and they want the world to know what’s going on. They’re not. It just started to just see things differently. I mean that’s really the best way to say this and it seems like there’s so much more, it’s just not, they started to see things differently.”

Unlike Harbaugh, whom Glazer had reported would be out in San Francisco even if the 49ers won the Super Bowl, the irreconcilable differences between Elway and Fox would have been reconciled via a Super Bowl win.

“They loaded up, it was kind of all or nothing,” Glazer said. “It was almost same thing with [former Falcons coach] Mike Smith this year. We knew going into the year that he had to do an awful lot to compete in the playoffs or just time to move on. Sometimes, Mike, in this league, people want a clear cut answer but it really gets to the point where you know what sometimes it’s time to move on. You know, sometimes you hang out with, you’ve got friends in life and you hang out with someone and you’re going out all the time and all of a sudden it just kind of runs its course and you start hanging out with another friend.”

Now, Elway will begin looking for another friend. A friend who will also be friendly with Peyton Manning. A friend who will be comfortable with the ridiculously high standards that saw a coach who won four straight division titles sent packing.

Fox is nothing special IMO.
I heavily disagree. He managed to pull two different teams out of long playoff droughts and coach them to the SB.

Edit: Frankly his resume with the Panthers/Broncos is reminiscent of Bill Parcells' post-Giants career.

Jets hire Todd Bowles

Posted by Mike Florio on January 13, 2015, 10:26 PM EST

And then there were five. Again.

Three days after the Bills hired former Jets coach Rex Ryan and one day after the Broncos and coach John Fox parted ways, the Jets filled one of six vacancies by hiring Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, per multiple reports.

Early Tuesday, a source with knowledge of the search process told PFT that it was “very likely” the Jets would hire Bowles. Others believed he preferred Atlanta — and that the Jets preferred Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

Ultimately, the Jets may have decided not to wait for Quinn, who barring a Green Bay upset of Seattle on Sunday will not be available until after the February 1 Super Bowl. Some had suggested that Quinn had lost interest in coaching the Jets.A native of Elizabeth, New Jersey, Bowles’ first NFL job came in 2000, with the Jets. He worked for the Browns, Cowboys, Dolphins, and Eagles before joining the Cardinals in 2013.
