I'm not all that sold on Linehan. It was nice to see screen passes for the first time in about five years, but aside from that I think a lot of the success we had was due to the offensive line just kicking ass. I feel like his play calling and play design still left a lot to be desired. I don't think he did enough to create mismatches for guys like Dez.

Marinelli, however, did a fantastic job. And as much of a jackass as Jerruh is, I can't imagine why an assistant coach would rather work anywhere else. This is the most high-profile gig in the league, and if Marinelli ever has his sights set on another head coaching job, he's got a much better chance of using Dallas as a springboard to it than Tampa.

I like most of what Linehan did. The only thing I really have to complain about is the shotgun plays on short yardage downs. You have an elite run blocking line and an elite running back. Worst case scenario at least make the defense think you're running the ball and then pass it. I don't feel like we used our dominant running game enough to help out the passing game. Other then that I love what Linehan did. Our screen game was a million times better this year. I love how we spread the ball around to different guys. We stuck with the run even when we fell behind in games. I also think Linehan was a great sounding board for Romo. Almost like a real QB coach to him.

I'd be interested to see if we improve without Callahan. I feel like as the "offensive coordinator" he may be to blame for the prominence of empty backfield looks in the gameplans. I'd be interested in letting Linehan coordinate and call plays, like a big boy.

I don't even have a problem with an empty backfield. It should just be on 3rd and 6 or 3rd and 10 where there is no chance of a running play. It's not appropriate for a 3rd and 2 when you're averaging 5 ypc.

Why would you feel Callahan is responsible for any play designs when he had to use Garrett's playbook when he was actually calling plays?

Over the last two games it just seemed like a great way to get Romo hurt. Having a guy coming out of the backfield as a potential blocker or an underneath target would really have reduced the number of times Romo danced around in the backfield like an idiot until someone dragged him down.

That would probably be my biggest criticism of Linehan. I felt like they underutilized playaction. They didn't completely ignore it, but I think they could have benefitted from using a it a little more. Overall though the guy did a really good job and I hope they can keep him on staff.

Broaddus has been saying all season on Talkin' Cowboys that he almost considers it a foregone conclusion that Marinelli will leave after the season because he and Lovie Smith are so tight. He's 65 years old and seems content to be a defensive coordinator. He doesn't really have anything left to prove at that level. He surely isn't concerned with money. I don't think the high profile job/springboard is a concern for him. It sounds like his loyalty to/relationship with Lovie will be the most important factor in his decision (that sounds totally :gay). If that is truly the case, there probably isn't anything Jerry can do to get him to stick around Dallas.

We get our rocks off once and then put a ring on his finger. Pretty soon we'll be noticing how much weight he's put on, wondering where the passion went.

I would think having to move would be a pain, I don't know what kind of contract Lovie is on, but he didn't exactly put the world on fire his first year. If RHG gets a 5 year extension that would be a very stable job without the hassle of moving...

So a 5 year deal.... years 1-4 mediocre and year 5 back to the playoffs for another extension.

Yeah, I think without a doubt the Cowboys job would be a much more stable situation. That may very well come into play. If Lovie doesn't have a considerably better showing in Tampa next season he could be out of there in a hurry.

I have no idea because I don't know Marinelli. To hear Broaddus talk about him it sounds like Marinelli is the kind of guy who would go and try to help his buddy turn things around so he can keep his job, his own job security/risk be damned. Broaddus is wrong all the time though so who knows. He does have the benefit of being able to talk to Marinelli and people in the building that know him well though, so he may be onto something.

Report: Cowboys, Garrett on “brink” of five-year deal

Posted by Mike Florio on January 13, 2015, 3:54 PM EST

Two days ago, the Cowboys ran out of mojo, only inches from glory. Now, they’re close to closing the deal on a new contract with their head coach.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the Cowboys and Garrett are “on the brink” of a five-year 55 million dollar agreement.

Garrett’s contract expired when the Cowboys’ playoff run ended. He’s a free agent, but there has been no suggestion that any other team wants to hire him.

In turn, owner Jerry Jones had no desire to choose for a “mutual parting” or other separation. He wants to stick with what’s working, even though it wasn’t really working in Garrett’s first three years in Dallas.

Once Garrett is signed, the challenge becomes keeping defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, who has been linked to the Buccaneers. Likewise, several key players are approaching free agency, including most significantly running back DeMarco Murray and receiver Dez Bryant.

That's cause he's an attorney.

I saw him in a Starbucks in Clarksburg, WV a few years ago (where his actual law practice is based) and he was rude to everyone around him.

I guess he was pissed cause the "common folk" were in there drinking coffee too.
