Tigers To Re-Sign Victor Martinez

By Mark Polishuk and Steve Adams [November 12, 2014 at 4:06pm CST]

Victor Martinez was reportedly the Tigers’ top priority this offseason, and the team characteristically struck quickly, reportedly agreeing to a new four-year deal that will guarantee the Octagon client $68MM to reprise his role as the club’s primary DH.

They interviewed Raul Ibanez last week. Unless he plans to also play himself as a rotational DH, no thanks.

So the Braves have officially moved on from Jason Heyward. He certainly didn't live up to expectations but he was actually a little better at the plate in '13 & '14 than he was in previous years.

Miller is a solid young pitcher. I don't pay attention to minor league prospects so I have no clue if Jenkins is any good.

Now if they can figure out a way to get rid of BJ Upton I'd be happy. I doubt any team will trade for him with that bloated contract, so the Braves will likely have to go the Dan Uggla route and just cut their losses by flat out dumping him.

I hope we fill these holes in the order with players that can actually make contact and put the ball in play. Way too many strikeouts in the Braves lineup from top to bottom. That needs to be fixed ASAP. Heyward & Uggla were free swingers so those moves help. Now get rid of Upton, please.

I like this deal for both teams...although these deals always seem to work out for the Cards. I do think getting Walden is big for them too...they mix and match their pen quite well. Miller is a solid #3 IMO and possible #2.

It takes a special kind of dummy to be willing to pay BJ that money. Not sure if there's two in the league.

Marlins agree with Stanton. 13/325.

I didn't think they would pay him.

I still can't believe that contract for Martin. McCann got a deal slightly richer and he is 2 years younger...and has been a guy with better numbers.

It's way too much, IMO. I wanted the Cubs to get him and I think I read that they offered him something like 4/$65M or something like that. I thought that was pretty generous for a 32 year old catcher but 5/$82M is pretty obscene. For that price I'm glad they let him go.

I just wonder how crazy it's going to be for Lester. Gammons said he gets the feeling the Cubs organization believes that he probably ends up back in Boston. Don't know how he knows that but if that's the case the Cubs will miss out on their top 2 free agent targets. Probably means they'll make a couple trades for guys like Cole Hamels and Miguel Montero. I don't mind Montero, because he wouldn't cost a ton in prospects, but Hamels is going to command more than I want them to give up.

I don't love it for ATL but I guess they probably figured they weren't going to sign him long-term so they got what they could get. Miller is a good young pitcher if he can keep the BBs under control. Heyward hasn't broken out offensively like they expected but he's still only in his mid-20s so he still may. Meanwhile he's a very good defensive outfielder. I don't hate it for ATL, but I think there is a better than average chance they have some trade remorse down the road.

Why would they not go after Scherzer? He can't cost any more than Lester and would be an instant ace. If they don't sign a FA soon then I bet they look hard at the trade market. The Cubs seem more focused on MLB ready talent...which I get because they have been gathering assets for a long time.

He's not an ace anymore, but I think Madden would like to reunite with Shields.
