Yep. Keep building the lines. Just switch sides.

@nfldraftscout: I would love to see the NCAA give athletes two options:

1. Full-ride scholarship
2. Pay your own way, but allowed to profit from likeness

------------

Interesting scenario. I'm guessing only a small handful of kids per year would bypass the schollie.
Full ride scholarship my ass. You get a scholarship unless they pull it to give it to another kid, and they won't let you work or, until recently, get more than one meal a day when you live off campus.

It amazes me that people still support universities exploiting young people, whether it's football players or the kids they sucker into predatory loans.

When an athlete is playing and practicing, he or she is working for the University. When I worked for the University I got minimum wage. They should too.

Collegiate athletes don't need to be paid like semipro athletes, but they should be given an allowance of some sort, and they should be completely allowed to profit off of their likeness and status.

Why wouldn't they be? They're the star, so they should be able to get paid to sign autographs or whatever.

I remember watching the Fab Five documentary and seeing one of the reporters say that Chris Webber had helped bring that university so much money, and yet, the guy didn't even have money to eat a meal at times. That is absolutely ridiculous.

It is no wonder so many of these kids from the projects take money. They don't have parents who can send them a couple hundred here and there for clothes, food, or just to hang out with friends or take a girl out on dates. So what are they supposed to do?

I don't begrudge any of these student athletes for accepting money or handouts of any kind. They help these universities make millions, so the least the university could do is let these kids pocket a few hundred bucks here and there so they can get themselves what they need.

I just do not agree. Clay, you are one of those the-man-holdin-me-down kinda guys.

If you are starving live on campus. Pretty simple, right? How is that someone holding something from someone? Every single one of these kids eat just fine, they get a free education and an opportunity to live out their dream of making it to the NFL. They are set up for success by playing a game that is enjoyable. Give me a break on the whole deal of them being held own.

This society cries about injustices more and more every year. People expect things before they are ready or before they worked for it. There is not one damn thing wrong with being a poor college student. I don't feel sorry for anyone who had to be poor for some of their life. The end product might have a chance to develop a little more richly having to go through a time of slim pickins.

As far of likeness, I do agree that they should profit from this. Just understand the original intent though. At one time we needed a clear separation between professional and amateur athletes. It wasn't some big scary monster that was trying to keep poor young people starving to death.

The only reason they don't want the kids to make money is because they get off on controlling them. Colleges love screwing people, that's why they make you pay thousands to stay in a damned dorm instead of letting a poor student spend a couple hundred on a cheap apt off campus. They act like the athletes are getting such a good deal. College degrees are mostly worthless in this country. I have a sociology bachelors (yeah, I know, great choice) and it's never done a damned thing for me. Unless you're going engineering or nursing (athletes' schedules would never allow a demanding degree like that, they are practicing, travelling and studying film while other kids are studying) you'd be 100 times better off learning a trade.

That was also propaganda. Jalen Rose is very outspoken about the pay for play and I think he was a producer on that specific documentary.

Here at Tech the athletes have their own dedicated dining hall where they have all 3 squares a day provided for them for free. I would imagine that's probably the norm at most universities.

Degrees are very beneficial. You just chose one that was worthless.

I think the bigger complaint is that when you miss a meal due to class or other commitments you may need money to run and grab a bite to eat. Every school has free meals for their athletes but that food isn't served 24 hours a day.

I don't completely disagree with that. Degrees are definitely watered down these days. On the other hand, people have changed reasons for getting educated. Now it is seen simply as a tool to get a career. Kids go in with dreams that the piece of paper will magically make their life successful. That is simple not true. What our society lacks is grit. It is sad to see the expectations that young people have to the point they feel they were done wrong if they aren't successful. That is completely backwards thinking.

I would never hire an idealistic young college graduate. I'd rather hire someone that has some will, common sense and drive. Most young graduates don't have that.

They shouldn't need food 24 hours a day. I know the main dining hall for athletes at UCF is open til midnight. I'm sure it's because coaches don't want their kids running around past then either.

Do we need a class on how to properly plan and carry a Ziploc baggie? I mean, finding weed is harder than figuring out how to feed yourself...

I believe that it is a new conference rule.

What I do remember is that most major universities were getting on board with this. The details are a little foggy...

At Tech they had their own dining hall for years. Well, at least while I was going there back in the 90s.

Yessir that's right but recently they have made sure that players have food on the weekends as well.

They also have an athlete tutoring and advising center now, too.

Taking Adrian Peterson in the first round would be stupid? How bout Emmitt? Barry Sanders?

Typically when dealing with that position, I agree to wait. But when a special talent comes along you grab it. Gurley has that talent.
