Ron Gardenhire, who had managed the Twins since 2002, was dismissed Monday with a year remaining on a two-year deal he signed last season.

The entire coaching staff – Rick Anderson, Paul Molitor, Terry Steinbach, Tom Brunansky, Scott Ullger,Joe Vavra and Bobby Cuellar – is being let go, too. All were operating on one-year contracts, and the Twins want the new manager to be able to select his own staff.

-----------
I like it. Besides Gardenhire, the main coach they needed to get rid of was Rick Anderson. Terrible pitching coach. I hated his 'pitch to contact' way of teaching. I hope they either bring Molitor or Steinbach back as manager. And wouldn't mind if whoever they hire brings back Brunansky as hitting coach. The Twins have improved immensely at the plate since Bruno was hired. But even if none of them come back, I like that the FO isn't trying to force any coaches on the next manager.

I hope the Twins bring back Gary Gaetti, extract his front two teeth, and use them as foul poles.

Same here.

As an aside, I know it would never happen because baseball is too reliant on its history and historical statistics, but I really wish MLB would scale back the season to about 140 games.

IMO, 162 games is too much for the modern age. Most of the casual fans completely tune out MLB in August once football season rolls around.
Baseball really should have the World Series before Labor Day. No one cares about baseball once football starts

Didn't see this one coming. Not a very good track record in Arizona, but his experience since then has mostly been FO and scouting. I'm wondering if maybe they think he'll more apt to play nice with Luhnow and his methods. They were saying they wanted a guy with a substantial big league record of success, though, so it's kind of a weird move. We'll see.

Pretty great WC going on...hard to root against either KC or Oak.

Billy Bean is rightfully going to catch a lot of hell for trading away serious future assets to fail here with only one more year of Samardzija to show for it. Not saying they're going to lose, but if they do...no bueno for Billy Bean.

I love it. Oakland traded the farm for just about nothing and almost didnt even get that. Couldnt happen to a better team.

What did the trade consist of? I want to laugh at the A's, too.

I'm not so secretly rooting for the Royals to win it all.

Ed can give the exact details but it was their top prospect and something else for smarzdjfkdklsekrkia. Maybe not their whole farm but from what I've read their system isn't stacked to begin with. They at least get another season with him, though. Then you have the Cespedes trade for what looks to be a rental in Lester. Don't remember what they gave for Hammels or if he was part of the Smarzdja trade.

So, you're saying we should win West next year? :towel

A one game playoff in baseball makes for great drama, but remains a stupid idea.

I like it better than a 3 game series. If you make the WC a 3 game series the teams that are playing have an advantage over the teams not playing. I know people will point to rest and whatnot, but there is something to the repetition of playing.
