Interesting to listen to Polian talk about building a draft board and how he assigned grades. Makes me wonder if a similar mindset is why someone like Warford wasn't on our board.

Just dawned on me that after taking Claiborne, Crawford, Wilber, M. Johnson, all defensive players, in the first part on last years draft that Jerry's brilliant draft strategy this year was to focus almost exclusively on offense the first two days this year.

We basically took half the draft prospects off the board the first 3 rounds. I think there were a few exceptions, like maybe Vaccaro or Richardson dropping to us or targeting safety in rd 2-3 if we didn't get Vaccaro. But this explains bypassing Floyd, Reid, Elam and all of the quality DT, DE in the 2-3 rounds. It's not so much that none of these guys fit our gameplan but that they didn't fit our draft plan of devoting most of our high picks on offense to pacify Garrett/Romo after spending all our high picks last year on defense.

Obviously we needed to address OL but there was no way any DL we wanted had a chance since JJ and team were fixated on offense and safety.

It wouldn't surprise me if Jerry did this to give Garrett one last hurrah before having to fire him. He hopes it'll save him some embarrassment.

I think having an all defense draft in the early to mid rounds last year was more of a factor. Didn't think this team could get any dumber but with just a few exceptions they basically took over half the players off their board this year. Other than possibly Vaccaro/Richardson in 1st or saftey in rd 2 or 3, no other defensive player was even in the mix. None of those quality DE or DT's had a shot yesterday because they weren't even in the mix. All offense w/ exception of getting a safety at some point. Unreal.

Now I will take a defense or offense draft over a special teams draft, but still that kind of plan is just another prime example why this team never wins.

@AdamSchefter: Bengals re-signed OT Andre Smith to a three-year, $18 million deal that includes $8 million this year.

There you go, Winston/Clabo. The bar has been set, now get it done.
Yeah, but there is no way that either of them get that much money, Andre Smith is the best of the three pretty clearly.

Damn...Williams ran a 4.46 at 6'2.

Nice pairing with Dez. I like the draft pick.
After going like 20 years by only addressing WR with either a high pick (Galloway via trade, Roy via trade, Bryant via first) or late pick (uh, pick a name), it's nice to see us get a legit WR who can develop into a starter.

It's the kind of forward-thinking draft pick this team all too rarely makes.

Correct.

Especially when you consider the insides are where we are lacking the most right now.
Speaking of building inside-out and not having a clue what direction you want to go in, the Ticket guys brought up this great point yesterday....

Went went out last year and spent a $50 million free agent contract, and a $10 million rookie contract/1st round/2nd round pick on corners. Plus we already have invested a huge contract in Orlando Scandrick. We did so deliberately ignoring getting more DLs. For a defensive coordinator who stupidly told us at the Senior Bowl that all he wanted was corners in the offseason.

Then we go out this offseason and import a defensive philosophy that devalues the corners even more than the average defense. You don't need strong man-press corners in this defense, you need quick-twitch smaller, quicker guys, but there is much more importance in having a dominant DL.

And Jerry says we are "committed" to this defense. So for the next 5 years, we are going to have assets tied up in two players who the scheme devalues (and again, this is leaving out the my own personal take that CBs are the least important position on the field -- this is a discussion of the Tampa-2 defense in general, press corners are not important).

All you can do is laugh.

Of the remaining RB's rank them in order of preference since that is where we are going with our next pick.

Jets got Chris Ivory for a 4th.

I would've sent a 4th for him too.

There are plenty of quality backs left that we don't have to force it in round 4, but I thik Franklin is easily the top guy left followed by Stepfan Taylor, Ellington.

Im secretly rooting for Latavious Murray later though.
