Insider poll: Garrett 30th out of 32 coaches

IRVING, Texas -- His 29-27 record indicates that Jason Garrett is an average NFL head coach.

But a poll of 30 league insiders , conducted by ESPN.com ‘s Mike Sando, isn’t nearly as kind to the Dallas Cowboys’ head coach. Only Cleveland’s Mike Pettine and Oakland’s Dennis Allen ranked lower than Garrett.

30. Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys (3.67 average)
It was tough for voters to give Garrett a high grade based on on-field results, but there was also a pervasive feeling that any coach would struggle to succeed in Dallas given owner Jerry Jones' leadership style and decision-making. Multiple voters thought Jones was the one responsible for the disastrous change from Rob Ryan to Monte Kiffin at defensive coordinator, for example. "Tough place, tough everything," said a longtime executive with a background in multiple organizations. "Garrett is a smart guy, but he doesn't reach everybody."

A current GM gave Garrett a 3. "His circumstances are way more difficult than people realize," this GM said. "Some people think they have underachieved. I think they may have overachieved under the circumstances. They have been very good offensively."

A former GM said he could envision Garrett getting fired, landing somewhere as a coordinator and then succeeding as a head coach for a different organization down the line. "He could emerge as a really good head coach who has been tested by fire," this former GM said.

Garrett should garner no sympathy because he works for a dysfunctional franchise. He chose to stay with the Cowboys, turning down offers to become the head coach for the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons when he was Dallas’ offensive coordinator.

It’s not as if Garrett was blindsided by Jerry’s ways. His father, Jim, lived it as a longtime scout for the Cowboys. Garrett saw it up close as a backup quarterback during the franchise’s ‘90s glory days, when Jerry and head coach Jimmy Johnson divorced because they both wanted credit for the back-to-back Super Bowl titles.

Garrett also benefited from Jerry’s unique management style. Remember, he was hired as the offensive coordinator before the Cowboys completed their search for a head coach and essentially appointed as the head coach in waiting before Wade Phillips’ job security became shaky.

There’s no question that Garrett knew exactly what he was getting into with Jerry. Maybe it’s a credit to Garrett that the Cowboys have managed to be mediocre despite the obstacles that come with the owner/general manager.

Then again, the Cowboys would have been good enough to make the playoffs at least twice during Garrett’s three full seasons if not for his game-management gaffes. That should be the primary criticism of him as a head coach.

Even with those issues and a lack of a playoff appearance, No. 30 out of 32 seems to be too low for a head coach who has been stuck in the middle of the pack.

Wut? I'd say it's too high for a coach that costs his team games every year

If anything, Jerry's presence gives Garrett a built-in excuse to suck.

30 out of 32 is about right. I *never* expect our coaching staff to out-coach anyone. No one. Every game comes down to players being able to out-pimp coaching gaffes, if anything.

It's not Jerry's fault when Garrett goes ultra-conservative and hands Tom Brady the ball back for a back-breaking last minute score. Or when he calls/OKs 50 million pass plays resulting in late game interceptions against Detroit, Denver, and Green Bay. 17 passes in a row.. who the fuck does that and expects to be credited with jack shat?

Jerry's a dick, but he's not in there managing the play-calling. Garrett has no balls and no passion, and isn't football savvy beyond the passing game no matter well he interviews.

He absolutely needs more seasoning-- Hell his actions in seeking to learn from Jimmy Johnson and Mike Krzyzewski are testament to this. What other real NFL coach does that?

For a head coach on the job as long he has been, he shows up poorly prepared too much.

I can't recall any time, since his rookie year, where I was like, whoa, he actually outcoached the opposition.

do his rabid supporters really believe he'd get another head coaching gig right away if he were let go by Dallas? he is literally coaching for the only team that would have him.

Anyone giving Garrett points for keeping the team mediocre while under Jerry's oppressive thumb conveniently forgets that both of the previous head coaches managed multiple winning, playoff seasons under the same shitty owner/GM.

8-8 the last three years. Now I am not stating a case for Garrett, but if the end result is the record you produce; aren't there 3+ coaches who have done worse?

They also conveniently forget Garrett's standing with Jones.

This is what Lane Kiffin would have been if he played ball with Al Davis.

Nothing less, nothing more.

Eh, 30. 25. 20. Who gives a shit.

He is not a winning football coach. Sorry, but that is what I see.

What I see is a politician who can play both sides and appear to be in charge.

He is doing his best, but his robotic demeanor is something I do not think today's player relates to.

At all.

He is not especially skilled where he can impress anyone with a brain.

He is not innovative.

He has copied whatever he has learned through the years and lacks the personality/creativity to add his own twist to it as others in similar situations have.

I cannot think of one special quality he has that we could not get from another guy.

Just look at what McCoy did in San Diego with lesser talent. SMH.

I am just glad he has not been re-upped. a list like this will grab Jerry's attention you know he cares what the rest of the NFL is thinking.

The Cowboys likely would have made the playoffs the past year(s) if a better coach were on board.

Garrett's gaffes costs his team at least 2 wins per year. The Cowboys' season likely don't come down to win or go home week 17 games if not for the games that Garrett pisses away throughout the year.

That's the first thing I thought of as well. Cleveland's coach? Buffalo?
