Oklahoma suspended their 5 star RB, Joe Mixon, for the entire season after he pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge for punching a female.

I'm shocked he got an entire year for this, especially since this is the first time he's been in trouble. I was expecting about a 3-4 game suspension at most.

A full year suspension for one punch. It's a little heavy-handed, IMO. (no pun intended)

I'm willing to bet the backlash the NFL received for Ray Rice's 2 game suspension played a role in the university's decision.

It is the first time in 6 years that we have the same guy two years in a row. You can't recruit or build a defense like that.
That's kind of what I was alluding to. When you've changed schemes as much as TTU and tried every D but the 7-4 diamond since McNeil went to East Carolina, it's no wonder the D is bad.

Also regarding Mixon, the female reportedly called him the N word then pushed and slapped him first and she's not being charged with anything. How the hell is that fair.

I'm fine with him being charged for assault and being suspended but she should be charged with assault as well.

Sounds a lot like the Bethel/Battle situation at Tech.

It is and I thought about that.

I'm wondering why both aren't being punished. I don't know the female's history but I know Mixon isn't a trouble maker. From what I've been reading the kid has no character concerns and this was out of character for him.

Also, consider this. Oklahoma makes this tough stand against domestic violence against Mixon but they are currently trying like hell to get Dorial Green-Beckham eligible to play this year. DGB has been in all sorts of trouble and is also facing assault charges against women.

Talk about a sending mixed signals.

Braxton Miller may be out for the season at Ohio State.
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/report--braxton-miller-reinjures-shoulder--season-could-be-in-doubt-013047069.html

Braxton’s Miller’s season with Ohio State could be in jeopardy after reinjuring his right shoulder during practice on Monday, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

A source told Cleveland.com that Miller left the field in significant pain.

CBS Sports' Jeremy Fowler said Miller was injured during a routine non-contact drill. He was throwing an out-route, felt something in his shoulder and was immediately taken off the field. Miller will have an MRI on Tuesday.

Ohio State has not confirmed the reports.

Miller, a Heisman Trophy candidate, originally injured his right throwing shoulder during the Orange Bowl loss to Clemson last season. He had surgery in February and missed all of spring football and has been held out of the early parts of fall camp.

In an odd twist of fate, Miller spoke to media following the Buckeyes morning practice and told fans not to worry about the fact that he hadn't participated much through fall camp.

"I'm doing fine," Miller told media. "It's just a progression in my shoulder, just a precaution. I don't want to overdo it before the first game and then I've got to sit out the first game because my muscle is too sore back in the back. It's part of the plan. We just talk about it every day and I do exercises to get the strength back up. I'll be good."

Miller noted he had muscle soreness, but nothing that was too worrisome. However, Ohio State had been resting Miller to give his shoulder time to adjust to the new workload. Even though he had thrown since being cleared in July, he was doing so every other day. He didn't throw much at all Monday morning, but was expected to get more action during the closed afternoon session.

"He is where he is right now not because the shoulder is injured,"offensive coordinator Tom Herman said, "but because of the fatigue of multiple practices day after day after day, 50, 60, 70 balls being thrown. The thing is going to get tired.

"The muscles aren't ready for that and so we've got to continue to build them up. Going out and throwing 30 routes for 20 minutes with the wideouts (in the summer) is a lot different than having a full 2-hour practice with your team. We just have to continue to build him up to that he can do that, muscle-wise."

If Miller is out for an extended amount of time — or even the season — Ohio State's hopes for a national title and even a Big Ten title take a serious hit. Redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett is listed second on the depth chart after being promoted ahead of sophomore Cardale Jones. However, neither has much experience. Barrett redshirted last season while Jones played in three games. He completed just one pass for three yards.

Miller suffering any sort of setback, especially one that could cost him the season, was probably Ohio State's biggest fear. Even though it had the entire offseason to get its green quarterbacks ready, nothing can replicate game action.

We'll update as soon as Ohio State confirms Miller's status.

The belief is that he seriously dislocated his shoulder attempting a pass. :lol

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- The University of Maryland says it will start guaranteeing scholarships to students-athletes until they graduate, regardless of injury or on-field performance.

Maryland announced Tuesday that the guaranteed scholarships will begin this November. They will go to athletes in all sports, not just the so-called revenue sports of football and basketball.

NCAA rules allow scholarships to be renewed on a year-to-year basis and reduced or canceled for any reason. Critics have argued that such policies undermine the NCAA's argument that revenue-generating athletes should not be paid. Earlier this month, a federal judge issued an injunction that paves the way for future college football and basketball players to get monetary compensation.

Maryland says it's one of the first Division I schools to guarantee scholarships for athletes in all sports

I cannot wait for college football to start. My team still needs some work along the defensive line. Still, I'm very excited about the future.

I'm thinking 8 wins this season. Still plenty of work to do.
8 wins eh?

That's about where I see Texas' ceiling.

If we get 8 wins, I'll be happy.

Can't wait for college to kick off. :towel

I wouldn't be shocked to see plus or minus 2 wins. I'm guessing that the defense still have a long way to go. The offense will be explosive though.

Word out of Austin is that the QB situation is a little sketchy. If Ash goes down things down look good. Ash goes down often, so that could be bad.

This is how I see things, as well. 8-10 wins that could turn into 6-8 wins easily. We have a really good home schedule this year, so a lot of our tough opponents will be played in our house, so that helps a lot. The Jones is a very difficult place to play for visiting teams.

Big 12 problem children: TCU, West Virginia

Today, Big Ten colleague Adam Rittenberg wrote about Michigan, and how the Wolverines have become the “problem child” of the Big Ten. Despite their tradition and resources, the Wolverines have been unable to win big, and instead have been a drag on the league.

But the Big Ten isn’t the only conference with problem children. Texas is the obvious one in the Big 12. But that horse has been beaten with enough ink. And the Longhorns are hardly the Big 12’s only one.

When the Big 12 lost Texas A&M and Missouri three years ago, the league didn’t appear to be losing all that much.

Despite their money, cavernous stadium and passionate fan base, the Aggies were themselves mostly a drag on the Big 12. But during its entire tenure in the Big 12, Texas A&M reached double-digit wins as many times as Kansas did -- once. With the rise of Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, the Aggies were usually an afterthought in the Big 12 South Division title race, which was dominated by Oklahoma and Texas.

In place of Texas A&M, the Big 12 was adding TCU, which not only had emerged into one of top mid-major programs in the country under Gary Patterson, but was fresh off a 13-0 season and Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin.

The Horned Frogs seemed to be a suitable replacement to their old Southwest Conference rival.

Unlike Texas A&M, Missouri had actually surfaced into a conference title contender behind Gary Pinkel and a wide-open offense. The Tigers actually won 40 games their last four years in the Big 12. But while a contender, Missouri never actually won the conference. Nor had the Tigers ever gone to a BCS bowl.

The program the Big 12 replaced Missouri with not only had been to three BCS bowls, but had won all three. Like TCU, West Virginia joined the Big 12 on a roll, after rolling Clemson by 37 points in the Orange Bowl to cap a 10-win season.

But since entering the Big 12, both the Mountaineers and Horned Frogs have failed to carry the weight everyone expected them to. And while Texas A&M and Missouri have gone on to succeed in the SEC, TCU and West Virginia have faltered in the Big 12, further damaging -- instead of salvaging -- the reputation of the conference in the post-conference realignment era.

The Mountaineers have gone 6-12 in the Big 12, and failed to qualify for a bowl game last season for the first time in a dozen years. TCU has struggled in its new league, as well. Like West Virginia, TCU too went 4-8 last year in its worst season under Patterson.

As college football transitions into the playoff era, now would be an opportune time for West Virginia and TCU to shed their problem child status.

Both have veteran teams loaded with players experienced in competing week-in, week-out in a power conference. TCU has 15 starters back; West Virginia, 14. Both made aggressive staff additions during the offseason. Patterson hired Sonny Cumbie and Doug Meacham to install an up-tempo offensive attack; Dana Holgorsen brought in longtime Penn State assistant Tom Bradley to flank first-year defensive coordinator Tony Gibson.

Both also have chances to make nonconference impressions. The Mountaineers play Alabama and Maryland away from home; TCU plays host to Minnesota.

Sure, West Virginia and TCU haven’t been what the Big 12 thought they would be. Especially compared to what Texas A&M and Missouri have done since bolting. But the Mountaineers and Horned Frogs can change that this year. And they won’t have to wait long for their chance to do it.

The NCAA denied the DGB's request for immediate eligibility at Oklahoma.

Glad to see they came to that decision. I did not want to deal that headache.

He will still be on the team, no? He has to sit out a year. Unless he goes to a smaller school.

Yeah, he's still on the team but I think he'll declare for the NFL draft since he'll be eligible in '15.

So I don't think he'll ever play for OU, which is fine with me.

So, this USC Josh Shaw story might have some legs, so to speak...

Nic Shimonek is transferring to Tech this fall. What do you know about him? Tech is desperate for depth at the QB position. Are we basically getting a backup guy for the future? What is the Iowa QB situation?
Iowa's QB situation is pretty deep and talented. He was a guy that would probably never have gotten a shot at Iowa.

Per scout, or per signing? If per scout, what do per scout mean? Does it just mean we shot for the higher ranked players?
