I think I've asked this before but is this Dooley Vince' s boy?
Yeah, and he was the head coach at the University of Tennessee a short while.

OXNARD, Calif. – The Cowboys switched out a guard and a punter.

They added guard Stephen Goodin and waived guard Andre Cureton. They also added punter Tom Hornsey with the roster spot opened up by punter Cody Mandell’s release.

Hornsey won the 2013 Ray Guy Award for the best college football punter while playing for Memphis. The Australian isn’t the typical size for a punter at 6-3, 220 pounds and was a former Australian Rules Football player.

He went undrafted this year and spent time in rookie minicamp with the Jets. Hornsey led the nation with 95 punts in 2011 and averaged at least 42 yards per kick all four seasons at Memphis. He also had a long of at least 63 yards each of those four seasons.

Hornsey’s best year came this past season, as he averaged 45.2 yards per punt with a long of 79 yards. Given his size and athleticism, he was also a threat to fake and run. He ran the ball once each of his past three seasons and got at least 14 yards each time.

Punter Chris Jones is still the frontrunner for the job.

Goodin has spent the majority of his career on the Giants’ practice squad, suiting up for one game with the team in 2013. The 6-6, 310-pound guard is a 25-year-old out of Nebraska-Kearney.

Garrett Updates Melton's Injury, Bishop & More

OXNARD, Calif. – Cowboys coach Jason Garrett addressed the media Tuesday, hours before his team is scheduled to practice against the Oakland Raiders

The bulk of Garrett’s press conference concerned the suspension of Orlando Scandrick for the first month of the regular season and the problems that creates. But Garrett also addressed a pressing issue regarding one of his other key starters – defensive tackle Henry Melton.

Melton left practice Sunday with a groin strain, which Garrett described as a “tweak.” The 2012 Pro Bowler won’t be available for Tuesday’s practice.

“We’ll take him day-by-day and see how he does with the work he gets,” Garrett said. “We don’t think it’s too, too serious – we’ll just evaluate it as it goes.”

In his place will be a rookie who showed up during the preseason opener against San Diego – Ken Bishop. The seventh-round draft pick is widely considered more of a one-technique, but Garrett said he’ll have an opportunity to start at the more pass rush-oriented three-technique spot this week.

“He’s just done a lot of good things since he’s been here. He’s a big guy, he’s athletic. He’s got a little snap to him, both in his upper body and his lower body.” Garrett said.

Bishop drew a flag for a horse collar tackle during the loss to the Chargers last week when he chased down a San Diego running back and brought him down from behind. Garrett said it was a tough play to dissect, because of the negative of the penalty combined with the positive of the effort.

“That’s the way he’s played – he’s been a guy who’s been in the pack there with the rest of the defensive linemen, but somehow, some way he gets out of the pack and he’s chasing the football,” Garrett said. “That’s kind of his temperament, his demeanor, and he’s been that way since the start of it. So, that and his playmaking ability, I think warrants an opportunity.”

Here are some more highlights from Garrett’s press conference:

•The format for the majority of Tuesday’s practice will feature the Cowboys’ offense and defense split up against the Raiders’ offense and defense on the two separate fields in Oxnard. Garrett didn’t specify how much time the Cowboys’ first-team will spend against Oakland’s first-team.

•Wednesday’s practice will be more scripted and scrimmage-oriented, with a focus on situational football.

•Tony Romo will get a full day’s practice Tuesday against the Raiders. Garrett said Romo is “beginning to look more like himself,” but he declined to comment on the quarterback’s availability for the Ravens game on Saturday.

•Asked about Brandon Carr’s availability against the Ravens, Garrett said he hasn’t had that conversation with the coaching staff. But he added that it stands to reason Carr won’t play this weekend if he doesn’t practice during the week.

•Garrett said there will “absolutely” be repercussions for Cowboys players that get into altercations with the Raiders.

Gang concerns at Cowboys/Raiders practice
August, 12, 2014

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- The joint practices between the Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders are a Super Bowl of sorts for the Oxnard Police Department.

The police presence would be increased regardless of which team came to Oxnard to practice against the Cowboys. But it's especially important with the Raiders coming to town.

That's because two of Ventura County's most violent street gangs wear the apparel of the two teams. The Colonia Chiques, the county's largest gang, wear Cowboys gear. The Southside Chiques wear Raiders gear.

"There's obviously a gang rivalry between the two, but we've seen nothing that's seeped its way out here at all," Oxnard police commander Andrew Salinas said as the crowd filed in a little more than an hour before Tuesday afternoon's practice. "We feel that the steps we have taken to proactively approach this event have helped greatly. As you can see, it's a family event and everyone's having a good time."

Those steps started with doubling the normal police presence for practices. Salinas said there are approximately 30 officers on the scene, including a K-9 bomb unit, plain-clothes officers in the stands and parole and probation officers.

The Oxnard police also installed an observational tower in the parking lot that provides a view of the entire facility and increased searching methods at the front gate to prevent fans from entering with weapons and/or alcohol.

The Cowboys/Raiders-related gang rivalry was the lead story in Tuesday's edition of the Ventura County Star. The city's gang injunction forbids known gang members from wearing the team-affiliated gear within certain "safety zones," but the River Ridge facility is not included in that area.

Salinas said Ventura County's violent crime rate has "plummeted" in the 10 years since Oxnard implemented the gang injunction. Nevertheless, it was identified a significant concern as soon as the practices between the Cowboys and Raiders were scheduled.

"There was an initial concern, but after seeing this evolve today, there's been very little concern with that at all," Salinas said. "We were more concerned actually with the fan rivalry than we were with the gang situation and what it represents here in this community. Other than that, we've been very happy with what's transpired here."

I don't give a shit. But I don't really understand the Raiders players motives either. They aren't really our rival. This isn't even a real game coming up. There are no Cowboys players around to really see it. I mean are they really attempting to get the Cowboys worked up before a practice session?
