He must have got to that part of his training. It is at least the second time he's made some sly comment about baiting a player.

If he says hopefully, I'm guessing they aren't just being cautious. There has to be something wrong.

Hot Air: Babe Laufenberg on Tony Romo and why Brandon Weeden will play this season

By BARRY HORN

Published: 01 August 2014 01:40 PM

From his daily place on the training camp sideline, Babe Laufenberg has a unique perspective on Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

He has watched every snap. With an expert eye.

Laufenberg, the Cowboys radio analyst and KTVT-TV (Ch. 11) sports anchor, played quarterback in the NFL. He also has had back surgery similar to Romo’s. Same surgeon. Same rehab center. Same therapists.

Here’s Laufenberg’s advice to Cowboys fans:

“You better be prepared to see Brandon Weeden play some games this season,” Laufenberg was saying over the phone from Oxnard this week.

And that’s not just one former backup quarterback rooting for a member of the fraternity.

Laufenberg simply knows the pain.

First, a disclaimer from Laufenberg: Every back is different. Every surgery is different and pain thresholds vary. He was 45 when he had the first of his two discectomies. Romo was 33 when the back injury and surgery ended his 2013 season.

Still: “I can see all the symptoms of a herniated disk the way Tony moves,” Laufenberg said.

“You have to have a level of concern,” he added. “He’s now had two back surgeries. Troy Aikman was retiring at the age (34) Tony is returning. It was Troy’s back that forced it.”

Epilogue: Just the other day in a television satellite truck, Laufenberg’s back went into a spasm and he dropped to his knees in pain. There was no contact.

“Just one move and I was in agony,” he said.

Get ready, folks, it's The Branden Weeden Show coming to a TV set in your home sooner than you'd hoped.

Romo will only play in the 2nd and 3rd preseason game, per DMN.

Dallas Cowboys planning on QB Tony Romo not playing in first and last preseason game
By Brandon George

OXNARD, Calif. – Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo missed a third scheduled practice Saturday out of the first eight of training camp.

The Cowboys’ plan is that Romo doesn’t play in the first preseason game at San Diego on Thursday or in the last preseason game Aug. 28 against Denver.

The Cowboys want Romo to get some work in the second preseason game against Baltimore on Aug. 16 and get his most work of the preseason in the third game at Miami on Aug. 23.

Romo, who is coming off of two back surgeries, hasn’t practiced on five of the 10 days the Cowboys have been in camp (the entire team was off two of those days). Romo is expected to get some work Sunday but it won’t be extensive during the team’s annual Blue/White Scrimmage.

Club officials continue to say Romo is fine and they’re just being cautious. The Cowboys don’t have any plan in place for Romo to wear any kind of special equipment that could better protect his back. They believe the equipment he normally wears will be enough protection and adding anything else could hinder his mobility.

The Cowboys plan to start backup quarterback Brandon Weeden on Thursday at San Diego and give him most of the work in the first preseason game.

Romo usually doesn’t play any more than one series in the first preseason game and typically wouldn’t play in the last preseason game.

I seem to remember Romo outright sucking in some preseason games in the last few years and didn't get in synch til into the season. I'm not sure taking less reps is the answer.

That and a new offense (supposedly) is why I am not buying that him sitting out is anything other than injury related.
