FWIW, I actually would leave $50 million on the table. Because it's not actually $50 million. The total difference in Carmelo Anthony's career earnings, after endorsements and all other sources of income, and taking into account taxes, will be something like 350 million versus 390 million.
It sounds like sour grapes because I'm a Bulls fan and my team just missed out on Carmelo Anthony, but I actually do believe this. The difference between that much money is simply negligible. At that point the ring would be more fulfilling in my life than the extra $40 million.
Also, keep in mind that Carmelo Anthony is now locked into that contract the next five years. The bulls offered him the chance to get out after two years when the cap shoots up. So he would've recouped some of that money.
Final point. The health of Rose is a bonus, not definitive. Even without Derrick Rose, the Bulls are a much better contender than the New York Knicks.
